I hope this is a reasonable contract, it'd be nice to start seeing teams make smart signings instead of always watching teams throw big money at young players. Risto is really good and I wouldn't mind seeing the sabres do well.

How many UFA years does that buy? If it's anything more than 1 year of UFA that is an incredible deal. Ristolainen is going to be one of the premiere defensemen in the game during that contract.

Looks like 2 years of UFA? He'll have finished his 7th season by 2019-20 and the deal ends in 2021-2022.

Very happy with this, really didn't want it to come in at 6 or more. Under 5.5 is gravy. Looking forward to this season!

Trouba just died a little inside. Ristolainen is a tremendous player.
Can you imagine if the Oilers actually scouted players instead of skimming TSN.ca? Who thought it was a good idea to take Darnell Nurse over Rasmus Ristolainen?

It is actually 1 year UFA. Ristolanien played only 34 games in his first season. The minimum is 40 games to count as one of the 7 accrued seasons towards UFA.

Good deal I think. Risotlainen is a beast. I like him more than Jones. Probably because he has a hard edge about his play.

At the time, basically everyone.

Yeah I don't recall seeing many rankings that had Ristolainen ahead. It was definitely a tough argument whether Nurse or Ristolainen had better long term prospects. I think we know EDM has probably hindered Nurse's development a bit while Ristolainen has flourished.
I mean using hindsight of course your take Risto. I still think Nurse has the potential to turn out pretty dang good but Ristolainen might be the next Pronger type.

I think Buffalo did have Ristolainen high on their list. I remember in one of those draft day videos, they were super nervous that someone ahead of them would pick him. Can't recall which team brought their Finnish scout on stage and the Buffalo team was like 'Oh crap!'

^ It was Nashville. Buffalo would've taken Risto 4th overall ahead of Jones.

Nurse was probably better at the time but you know, Edmonton happened

Nurse was indeed usually ranked around the 7th spot - never ahead of Jones, and never behind any other D that I recall. Nurse was supposed to be the next Pronger.
I actually think Nurse was never scouted for hockey IQ. I remember his first prospect's tourney, he always seemed 'nervous' and would make a bad giveaway under pressure. I thought it was just nerves anyways. A couple of seasons later, and I think it is just IQ and composure.
Ristolainen is the opposite of that. Cool and composed, incredible IQ. Maybe not as nimble as Nurse, but he is sure a heck of a better D right now and will probably be in the future.
I am so glad that we weren't stacked at center that year. IIRC, some (few) rankings had Monahan behind Nurse (some of those didn't like Monahan). I think there is a huge gap between 6th that year in Monahan and 7th in Nurse. Meanwhile, Ristolainen is very much in the conversation for that draft class as possibly being the best player selected (like Monahan, Barkov, MacKinnon and Jones). Lots of guys passed Nurse (imo). Still early to make definite proclamation, but boy am I glad we didn't select Nurse.
Nice to see Ristolainen sign a friendlier deal. Only one year UFA, but just like Johnny's contract - gives Buffalo a lot of flexibility and contract structure for the future, and 6 yeas is really a long contract.
