Default Gaudreau - Monahan - ?

With only 2 preseason games remaining, who do you guys think is the leading candidate so far?

Chaisson? He hasn't shown much at all IMO.
Shinkaruk? Maybe, has shown some speed
Pribyl? Injured
Vey? Looking like he is heading back to minors.
Frolik? Meh would prefer to keep him with Backlund.
Ferland? From preseason performance, I would say he is the leading candidate.

Hope we get to see at least one preseason game with Johnny and Mony together.

I missed most of the preseason. How did Shinkaruk look? Does he look like he will be a regular?

No one has stepped up yet

Ferland has done more than any of the other candidates

Shinkaruk would be my vote.
Ferland has no finish.
The rest are terrible.

Ferland would be my guess. Shinkaruk is too small for that line when they go up against other top lines.

Frolik wins my vote.

The whole Backlund - Frolik chemistry and line is overblown IMO

It's unfortunate that Kylington needs to learn how to be defensively responsible. I think he's the only prospect that could actually keep up on the first line properly even though he's a D-man.

It's going to be the ongoing story of this season. Who the hell is going to play on the first line.

Pony up the price for a legit cheap option in Tobias Rieder

There is nothing in the system that fits

I don't agree with the size being an issue when Hudler rising shotgun had that line as one of the best in the league. Size would be great, but not a necessity as proven before.

Is Rieder not a LW? General Fanager has him listed as a left handed LWer and I don't feel like watching another failed conversion attempt.

Freddy Hamilton is an interesting internal option. Right handed, some size, and decent abilities.

Iginla? They could trade Wideman for him?

Right now the top three RWers are Brouwer, Frolik and Ferland. Since it looks like they want Brouwer with Bennett and Frolik with Backlund, that leaves Ferland with Monahan.

Brouwer will be on the first line by the end of the season though.

You joke, but I would do that deal in a heartbeat.

Ferland is the best of a series of poor options. Some points in his favor:

-He's big.
-Can skate.
-Goes to dirty areas.
-Causes turnovers.

Someone who can put a little panic in the minds of opposing D is not the worst option to have with Gaudreau and Monahan. Forcing bad passes and mistakes around those two? Good luck.

Edit: Just noticed Alex Tanguay is still available - put up 13 points in 18 games with Phoenix after being dealt away from Colorado. Only 36 years old. Given the choice between Tangs Round 3 or any of the already discussed options... We could do worse.
