Andrew Mangiapane’s name may not sound familiar, but his story is.
Especially in Calgary.
An undersized forward whose sublime skill has forced doubters to take his pro aspirations seriously, he continues to defy odds by climbing hockey’s ladder, posting outrageous statistics and refusing to quit on his NHL dream.
And like Johnny Gaudreau, Martin St. Louis or Theo Fleury before him, no one should ignore his potential like the Ontario Hockey League originally did.
“I wasn’t drafted into the OHL — I was a walk-on,” said the 20-year-old in the midst of his second main camp with the Calgary Flames.
“I went to camp and no one knew me there and I just played really good. They decided to pick me up. I was almost like a nobody coming into it.
“I guess no one wanted to take a chance on a nobody.”

“Back in the OHL no one knew who I was so I caught people off guard, but I definitely feel I’ve earned a little bit of a rep now,” said Mangiapane, whose name literally translates into Eat Bread in Italian.
“I’ve always been able to get points at every level I’ve been to so I’m just going with it. Calgary is not afraid to pick small guys and that definitely gives me more confidence to come in here.”

Realistically, with a good showing here the next two weeks, he’s more likely destined for Stockton for his first pro spin.
“Yes, with men and all that,” said Mangiapane, who believes he has nothing left to accomplish in junior.
“I’m hopeful to just move forward and play pro against men and see the challenge.”
The challenge, as he’s been made painfully aware his whole life, is overcoming his size to make a mark at the next level. He believes he can do that by not only playing with an edge but by using his size to his advantage.
“Smaller players you can get into those tight spaces and come out with the puck and try to make a play with it by using the low centre of gravity,” said Mangiapane, who was plus-83 in three years with Barrie.
“All the small players have been small their whole life so going up against bigger players you learn things. If they’re pressing you there you spin off that way. You just learn to use it. Just get in there and piss people off, get under their skin. I’m not afraid, that’s for sure.”

Confidence can do wonders for a guy. From my own experience, I feel like I could have gone a lot further in hockey if I was more confident in myself.

It's great that the success stories of small guys coming thru the Flames org is giving this young man confidence.

I'm thinking that the 'about to be cut' line is more the Klimchuk-Lomberg-Smith line, if anything. Hard to tell with preseason though. Just my guess.

Yeah that line is more of the "definitely going to be cut" variety.
I am so disappointed by Klimchuk. Want to believe the Iggy chain will live on.

This is a terrible team without those 2. Would be the worst forward group in the league by a country mile barring any big jumps in performance.

Take off any team's top 2 forwards and what is left is probably the worst forward group in the NHL. 'Cept maybe Dallas and Washington, but they'd still be bottom 10.
