Default Yahoo warns users at least 500 million accounts were hacked

Posted here due to the magnitude of the breach.

Wow

https://www.cnet.com/news/yahoo-expe...hacked-report/

"Users who haven't changed their passwords since 2014 are highly encouraged to do so."

Quote:
Yahoo revealed that at least half a billion of its users were hacked from a 2014 leak.

The breach exposed up to 500 million accounts' names, email addresses, phone numbers, date of births, and in some cases, security questions and answers, the company said.

The internet pioneer said it's "working closely with law enforcement" on the breach, and believe that it was from a "state-sponsored actor," though it did not specify what country.

Yahoo is urging its users who haven't changed their passwords since 2014 to do so.

Verizon, which had purchased Yahoo for $4.83 billion in July, said it was notified of the massive breach within the last two days. The telecommunications giant said it had "limited information and understanding of the impact" in a statement.

That sucks. I actually still have a yahoo email that I use for some stuff. Yes, I know Yahoo is dated but the email address still works like a current day email so I've never bothered to change it.

I love my hotmail account for all the things that need an "email address" to be entered in a contest, sign up for forums, etc. Gotta keep the real personal emails less cluttered. Plus the added nostalgia factor of it still being around since basically the start of the internet makes me check it now and again.

Logged in for the first time in like ... 6 years to change my password. Immediately get an email from Yahoo about an "unauthorized sign-in attempt".

Haha. I've had my hotmail acct since before hotmail was a Microsoft product. Got a ridiculously good username with no numbers, dots, underscores or anything. I just keep it alive for nostalgia. It's gotta be coming on 20 years now. I've got emails going back to 2001 still in there. It's kinda neat reading old emails the odd time from old girlfriends and pals.

3/4 of the way through 2016, they notify users of a breach that occurred in 2014.

Brilliant!

I'm the same way too. My Hotmail address is only 5 characters with no numbers or anything. It's also useful as an account for signing up for stupid websites and such.

I think they're just trying to remind people to use their Yahoo accounts.

Flickr is either owned by or associated with Yahoo mail system. Number of Flickr users alone could be in hundreds or millions.

I tried to log in to my Yahoo email so I can delete my Yahoo account but I couldn't remember the password, then I tried to retrieve my password but I had to enter my phone number from 15 years ago which I couldn't remember either

I think it was about that time that Yahoo forced me to update my password. Makes me wonder if they knew about this all along, and some reason didn't bother to tell people.
