Backlund has a concussion
What a terrible way to start the season if he misses any time.

Team Sweden say it's a day to day upper body injury. Minor concussion most likely?

That'll be a great way to start a pivotal season in the Flames rebuild....without their hugely important #2/#3 center.
Thank goodness Monahan pulled out of this cash grab, and hopefully Sam is ready to take the next step.
Hopefully Backs isn't out long (or at all) but concussions can linger and come back easily.

So done with this tournament.
The best thing to happen right now would be for North America to lose to get Gaudreau out.

a good reminder to keep your head up, I suppose.
If it hadn't happened in the World Cup, it would have happened during an NHL game.

I can't help but feel if this was a midseason olympics i'd feel less upset by it. Instead, i feel like i'm supposed to just learn to care about this and be vested to the same level as the olympics.
I realize the NHL's aim is to ultimately have this equate to the hockey equivalent to the World Cup of soccer, but i just don't know if that transition is really realistic....
in any case, hope it's minor and he's back on the ice soon. Backlund, though not flashy, is quietly a fundamental & stabalizing part of the flames forward group. Him missing time will be a definite hit right off the bat for the season.

It was a dirty hit to the head. That's like blaming someone for getting hit from behind. That hit was clean like 5 years ago but a head hit is now an illegal play.

No it wasn't. He didn't target the head.

Yes he did. First point of contact was the head.

We freeze framed it in the office today ... his head was up. He chipped the puck with a back hand when he saw Sestito coming and was going to go around him. He certainly wasn't ready and was pretty much defenceless to the shoulder to the head he took a half second later.

Think he tried to be as clean as possible on the hit. Think Backs had his head down and was in a bad spot (that's on him). Still think the first/primary point of contact was the head.
Those IMO are the facts.
Does that make it 'dirty'? Probably not. Still not 'clean' either. Right in the grey area.

There is nothing in the grey area with the NHL and head shots anymore. Hits to the head are illegal.
They slowed it down during the game yesterday and the first point of contacts was the face/head.
