Flames team scope: Calgary opened the 2016 Young Stars Classic with a convincing 4-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets. “I thought it was a good first game for our guys,” coach Ryan Huska said. “I think there were nerves both ways. Guys want to make a great impression. I thought as the game went on we competed really hard, put a lot of pucks to the net, and we got some scoring opportunities at the end because of it. It was nice to see.” Mangiapane had a goal and an assist, and Austin Carroll, Ryan Lomberg, and Matthew Phillips also scored for the Flames. Jon Gillies made 22 saves in his first action since undergoing season-ending hip surgery last December.
Oilers team scope: Edmonton took a 4-1 win in their tournament opener against the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night. In his first game in over five months following knee surgery, Jesse Puljujarvi, the No. 4 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, scored twice and added an assist to pace the Oilers. “[First] period not so good, but after that [I was] feeling better,” Puljujarvi told the Oilers’ website. “We played good but we can be better.” Nick Ellis made 29 saves in the game. Joey Benik and Markus Niemelainen also scored for the Oilers, and Kyle Platzer had two assists.

That would suck. I've never seen the kid play and I'm intrigued. I kind of wanted to evaluate whether he would jump straight into the NHL and what kind of game he would bring to the Oilers.

After the game against the Jets I could see the Oilers sitting him. The Oilers team is not that big, Puljujarvi is probably one of the bigger kids on the team.
That would suck. I've never seen the kid play and I'm intrigued. I kind of wanted to evaluate whether he would jump straight into the NHL and what kind of game he would bring to the Oilers.

Yup, I gathered that after seeing a 3 point night, but I really want to watch what he does all over the ice. I'm sure he's got talent to score, but how does he play ever other part of the game?

Pulju seems to be taking lessons from McUseless, just plays really fast and doesn't really get much done when he's not in space. Take his space away and he can't use his (ridiculous) speed. Nice hands too.
Hoping to see if Bruce can keep up at this level, and hoping to see more Kylington brilliance.

Puljujarvi was playing his first game in 5 months and looked pretty sloppy at times last night. Despite his three points, he didn't look nearly as confident in his game as when I've seen him play in the past. Based on all the scouting reports, he's actually supposed to be a very solid two-way player who doesn't ignore his own end (which is a welcome change for an Oilers forward prospect).

He certainly looked a little lost at times, but rust or not, that's normal for a tournament where no one is familiar with their linemates or any semblance if coaching systems. I don't think you could possibly evaluate defensive awareness for a center in a viewing like this.
He was probably the fastest player or there last night but lots of extra skating. Didn't pass much and tried to carry it in against a team that was obviously focused on him
