I was concerned that they'd poach Dineen from Chicago...

Yes, but looking at his resume he doesn't have much to go on besides that. 4 years as a head coach in the minors, some of that in a league below the AHL. Most of his time has been spent as an assistant in the AHL.
They must really believe in him, because that's not a lot to go on.

That's more than when they hired Joe Sacco as he only had two years experience as head coach. I suppose seeing their options were petty limited at this time of the year they can give this guy a season and if it doesn't work out they can do a proper coaching search next offseason.

Uh, right...how did that work out for them again?

It didn't work out great but their options are limited right now and maybe they had their eye on this guy for a while.

He's sure a solid minor league coach. But zero NHL experience. I always figure that some NHL experience (as either HC or AC) is a requirement, in addition to some head coaching experience at any level.

They had all the same options the Flames did, except for one. I think there are a lot of coaches out there.

^Agreed. Either show that you're an excellent head coach at your current level for a long enough period of time to prove it's not a fluke, OR work your way up to the NHL and get some experience there as an assistant.
I'm still not sure about Gulutzan, and he HAS previous experience as both a head coach and assistant coach at the NHL level, plus significant time spent in the minors. This hire by the Avs is curious to me.

I think for a young team like the Avs, X's and O's were more important than people management. He can grow into the latter role, but the former role was holding them back big time as they were basically worse than the Flames defensively.

I think you're underselling him a bit. He has 14 years of coaching experience and whenever he's been a head coach, he's succeeded and continued to work his way up the ranks. Seems like a natural progression from coaching one of the top AHL teams to getting a chance in the NHL. Probably not the most heralded candidate out there but it's not like they just hired a recent Avs alumni with no coaching experience.

You might be right. It just seems like not a lot of top end experience to me, but I'm probably wrong.
It also seemed like there were some very qualified candidates available instead of Bednar.
