Icon37 Sens sign Cody Ceci (2 yrs, $2.8 mil AAV)

http://senators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=891473

Quote:
Ottawa Senators (@Senators) general manager Pierre Dorion announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenceman Cody Ceci to a two-year contract which will run through the end of the 2017-18 National Hockey League season. The average annual value of the contract is $2.8 million ($2.25M, $3.35M).

Ceci, 22, established new NHL career highs in goals (10), points (26) and penalty minutes (18) while matching his career high for assists (16) over 75 games with the Senators during the 2015-16 season. Upon the conclusion of the season, he also skated with Team Canada at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Moscow/St. Petersburg, Russia. In 10 games with Team Canada, he scored one goal and earned five assists while helping the team to a gold medal.

This seems like a really good deal for the Sens but it is only 2 years.

This is the compromise bridge deal. Sounds like they tried for a 6 year deal but couldn't agree on $.

Nothing wrong with a bridge deal, depending on circumstances. Ceci is still establishing himself.

Bridge deals can really blow up in your face. For Ceci, I think the bridge is fine from the Sens' perspective. I can't see him blowing up like Subban did - and it wasn't like Subban didn't show what he was capable of before the bridge deal. Montreal gambled and lost, where (to me) this feels more like a sensible approach with Ceci.

To me, if "losing" is having the player blow up into an all-star/Norris candidate, I think I could live with that as a fan or GM. I get that they might have saved some money long term, but if there are doubts from management regarding the upside of a player, these prove it contracts are perfect.

Haven't expressed it in the Johnny thread, but I really don't mind a bridge for him as well. Prefer long term because I don't see too much risk, but if he is asking for a crazy number, perhaps the shorter term deal makes more sense.

Awesome, we should have all the market information we need to sign Johnny now.

I like the deal for Ceci. I don't really get it for the Sens. If they were in contention, it would be brilliant, but it's unlikely they're going to do much during the term of this, so saving the cap space later down the line would seem to make more sense. Still a fine contract, just not the cap management strategy I would have expected.
