Golf
The Men's Tournament begins tomorrow morning. Canada is the defending gold medal champions as George Lyon won the individual event last time golf was a participating sport in 1904. David Hearn and golf's biggest Flames fan Graham DeLaet are competing in the tournament for Canada. DeLaet is in the first group teeing off at 4:30 Mountain, David Hearn is slated to start at 6:25. Full list of start times here:

I know that we've discussed at length the issues leading up to this tournament in the LPGA/PGA Thread, but now that it's here what do people think of the course? Picks to win? How badly the guys who dropped out will regret it?

Course looks way too easy to me for pros, but we'll see how they do. As far as winner goes, I'll go a bit off the board and pick Padraig Harrington. He's playing well coming in and he handles pressure well. I also don't see any of the guys dropping out regretting it unless the IOC pulls golf from the Olympics right away and this was their only chance. All of the guys who skipped are just in their prime or still have years of prime left. Getting another shot in Tokyo seems likely for most of them.

I haven't followed the news regarding golf aside from some of the top players dropping out. What have been the discussions regarding the course? I haven't paid attention at all. How is the tournament even being organized? Is it the same as a standard PGA event or are there any differences?

Course just looks very open and the rough not too punishing. If the greens are rolling well I expect we'll see scores in the -15 or more range, even with this kind of weak field. It's just a standard stroke play event, though I don't think there's a cut. Oh and these things are roaming the course....

I know he's yet to win a major, but I'll take Sergio Garcia.

Sergio is a bum. I'm going with DeLaet. I think he has a really good chance of winning the Olympics.

DeLeat is way too poor at putting to win this thing. It's why he can't win a normal tour event. Hearn has a better shot of the Canadians. And actually I kinda like the thought of Sergio winning, can't ever win a major with all the best guys there, wins the Olympics with most of them at home.

Paddy Harrington is a great choice to win SCD, I feel like Bubba is going to be near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

I hate Sergio. Ideally he finishes fourth. I love watching him lose.

I'm no fan of Sergio either and I'm with you on rooting for DeLaet (although I'd be okay with Hearn winning as well). I just think this could be Sergio's best chance to win an unofficial major.

Love golf is in the Olympics. The only problem is it is no different from your average 72 hole tournament and I wish they added some Ryder Cup style team events like alternate shot.
I suppose it was hard enough to get golfers to Rio for one tournament so may have been very difficult to fill out two weeks of golf events.

Be great if either Canadian medals. Gold would be ideal since we are the reigning Olympic golf mens champions. Need to defend that 112 year old title.
Otherwise I think Stenson takes it.

I think the US would easily beat every other country if it was a team format. The European Ryder cup team is strong because it is all European countries combined, but I can't think of many countries that could put up 4+ strong golfers to compete with the Americans. Ya, golf is golf and "weaker" players often come out of the field to win stroke play tournaments, but I think team play is a little different and would strongly favor the best team- which would undoubtedly be the US. In stroke play, any individual/country has a good shot at gold.

I think it's cool that Ray Whitney is DeLaet's caddy, I will watch for that reason.
