Default Why are Calgary's dump fees much higher than Edmonton's dump fees?

Are we being gouged or is there a legitimate reason why we pay $113/tonne and they're paying $70/tonne?

The rates have been increasing for years, are we just supposed to suck it up and pay more and more?

...Edmonton dump fees are considered infrastructure improvements?

Ok but does that mean Edmonton doesn't need encouragement to recycle?

Its because Edmonton makes more money or has more cost savings with their municipal waste programs than Calgary does. Methane recovery is one of the ways they do this.

Edmonton had a curb side recycling program almost 20 years before Calgary.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Edmonton dump a lot of their garbage outside the urban areas (in whatever the surrounding MD is)? I would assume the MD has more attractive rates to encourage the business from Edmonton.

Edmonton has s very advanced waste processing system and have been doing it for years. They really got ahead of everyone on that.

Supply and demand? Calgarian's are continue to use the dump despite higher fees, so why not charge it?

I much prefer the city make money off of usage fees of services than other means.

Edmonton does have a world renowned waste management system, and I would assume that translates to lower cost of service.

There are so many options for this one I can't decide which way to take it:

I believe the Edmonton waste management system is called the Oilers. World renonoun for taking value pieces of potential and turning them into well managed pieces of waste.

There system costs more money than conventional landfilling.

http://www.edmonton.ca/residential_n...ices-fees.aspx

Landfilling is absolutely the cheapest way to dispose of waste in non land restricted cities with relatively short hall distances. Organics at best break even and recycling is a dosas aster in terms of economics because the demand just isn't there for the products.

It's likely due to either supply and demand or a different way of accounting for how much of the capital plus operating costs of a dump the fee should cover.

Edmontons Monthly household garbage fee is $43. Calgary's even after its latest stupidity is around $18 or so
