With all respect to Hudler and his success recently, I have to go with Martin Gelinas.

3 series winning goals to push the Flames to their first and only finals appearance since 1989 beats a good set of regular season stats.

Hudler did play really well during this time here. But I think Brad McCrimmon is the best free agent signing the team has ever had in terms of established players. Martin Gelinas also was a good signing for what he was paid and what he did during the cup run.

I don't know if the spirit here is the undrafted free agents...as the Flames do have a couple of those.

Brad McCrimmon was acquired in a trade for significant draft picks (including a first rounder); I don't think he was a free agent at that time.

Looking at the Flames trade history, Fletcher must have had a major brain cramp in the spring of 1990, when he gave away McCrimmon and Mullen, each for a second round draft pick.

Honorable mention to Roman Hamrlik, the only defensive partner to make Dion Phaneuf reach his potential.

Phaneuf hit 60 points playing with Aucoin in 07-08.

I think Hudler is a good choice, assuming they aren't talking about the young, undrafted types like Gio or Otto.

I really struggle to see how you can pick Hudler over Gelinas. Good production. Some of the most important goals in franchise history. Respected leader. What's the rationale for Hudler over him?

I like Gelinas, but Hudler had better production, was here longer and was also a respected leader. IMO he had a tougher leadership role, given the nature of the team (reliance on the kids to produce).

Gelinas had a magical few months, but overall I would pick Hudler.

I thought this too, he was definitely the guy who made the classic Sutter over the hill signing look like a good idea.

I don't know that Hudler was a respected leader. He certainly didn't set an example for that in many respects.

my piece from a year ago on the same topic ...

http://www.calgarypuck.com/2015/03/c...gent-signings/

the caveat ... my list focused more on July 1st signings not unheard of players that went on to become key cogs.
