NHL.com top 40 breakout players 2015-16 - Backlund #39
How does the outside world view the Flames? link to story
Backlund was the only Flame who made this list.
Gaudreau already had his breakout season in 2013-14 where he was 3rd in Calder voting.... However Klingberg who was 4th behind Gaudreau in 2014-15 showed enough improvement in 2015-16 to make #26 on this list... Only rationale I can imagine would be with Dallas being a winning team
Bennett is widely expected to be a top player. There are no fans on CP that were disappointed with his 19 goal 38 pt rookie season....
Somehow whoever was putting together this list has from the 2014 draft Draisaitl, and Sam Rienhart ahead of him as well as Larkin and Fabbri... Ekblad won the Calder the year before so he was not a breakout player in 2015-16. No respect at all for Bennett!
Here is the list... it is SFW , just minimized to keep size of post down

Sorry, but looking over that list, Bennett does not make the top 40. He was good, but 38 points doesn't displace anyone on there. Next year maybe.
The whole point of picking "break out players" would be to pick candidates that are likely to break out. Most of this list has already done that to an extent. Kind of a weird list IMO. Bennett is a prime breakout candidate, he could easily increase his production by 50% next year, that's not something that is true for most of the those players.

Probably why this list was for break out players last year?

Zuccarello had a 59 pt season in 2013-14.... that would have been his break out season... That would be the same with monahan who broke out in 2014-15 and simply matched it last season.
One could argue TJ Brodie should be on that list. He had a decent year in 2014-2015 but was still not on a lot of peoples radar. 2015-2016 from other telecasts I watched other than Sportsnet, he was talked about a lot by other analysts and also had a career year even with an injury to start.
Just my opinion though.

Are Kuznetsov, Panarin, Jones, Gostisbehere, Klingberg (to name but a few) really poised to improve that much upon last season to be called a breakout season in comparison?

I think you're interpreting the list wrong. This is a list of players that broke out last year. Not who they think will be breaking out this up coming season.
What a dumb concept. Listing last years breakout players? We can't figure that out on our own? Next year is what would be interesting.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
