Default Monahan: Contract extension is "getting there"

http://www.todaysslapshot.com/from-t...y-rest-career/

Quote:
Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan was on TSN on Monday morning.

On how close his camp and the Flames are on a contract extension:

“It’s getting there. It’s a process. The deal has to work on both ends, and obviously I want to be in Calgary. I’m just looking forward to getting it done and hopefully it gets done here soon.”

On if he’d prefer a bridge deal, or a longer-term contract:

“I definitely want to be there for a long time. I would prefer a longer-term contract, but that’s not up for me to decide. I want to be there. I want to be in Calgary for the rest of my career, so that’s something I’m looking forward to doing.”

On if he’s talking much with teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who is in a similar contract situation:

“Yeah, we talk a little bit. We’re in the same situation. We’re good friends. It’s something that we do talk about and I’m actually going to be seeing him tonight, so we’ll have a little chat and we’ll go from there. It’s not something that we’re battling about or anything like that. We both want to be there. We both want to play together. We want to win in Calgary.”

On how Steven Stamkos took less on his contract to help his team, and if we’ve entered that era of the NHL where players want to take a little bit less to allow the GM to bring in other guys in order to win:

“Yeah, for sure. If you’re a high-end player and you’re playing somewhere at a young age, that’s where your heart is and that’s where you want to win. Our goal is to bring a Stanley Cup to Calgary. If that’s what it is that we can bring other players in to have a little extra I guess money room and get them in to help us to be a better team, I think that’s the idea.”

If this doesn't doesn't help people think they will get equal, cheaper than expected long term deals, nothing will.

6.5 x 8 each

So happy that the Hurricanes took Lindholm instead of Monahan in the 2013 draft

Except that 6.5 aav is not taking a discount for Monohan, it is fair value. Johnny at 6.5 would be a huge hometown discount by comparison.

I'm talking about a collective discount. They clearly don't care if one gets more than the other or if they have to take a little less to help the team. These two are good kids, sound to be best friends and are probably trying to convince the other to NOT take a discount so they can put their heads down and continue doing what they are doing without worry

My first thought when I read the title, but seeing as the interview was just with Monahan I don't think that's the case at all

The Flames got really lucky with Monahan. Hopefully he hits 40 this year

Is there really that much gap between the two?
Obviously JG is flashier and fun to watch, but factoring in the defensive aspect I am not convinced their worth is far apart.

It's not because he's flashier, it's because odds are that Gaudreau will be a higher point getter than Monahan over the length of their deals. Monahan's two way game will be just as important but teams generally pay for points scored.

If we can get both for a combined $14 million I would be quite happy. Would love both of them locked up for 8 years

So if I got this straight they will take a collective discount that only affects Johnny's pocketbook, but they are also trying to convince each other to not take a discount?

IDK. Let's celebrate when he signs the discounted deal. I do appreciate what he is saying for sure, but let's see the deal. I would not begrudge him extracting every single penny of his market value from the Flames.

I suspect once one contract is announced, the other will be announced soon after.

That is if they aren't announced together.

I think that's about a million too much and yeah Monahan plays the tougher position, so he sacrifices stats in order to play more defence. They both should get close to the same deal just as Kane and Toews do.

Or they've clearly paid attention to their media training.

I don't think Johnny will do that, both of these guys will probably sign two contracts in their careers.
