Why is Tkachuk so much less? ... more BT wizardry? ... or is he more bonus heavy?
Or, just considered a lesser tier, perhaps?

Finland had such high hopes for this kid. Too bad his career has already gone down the tubes.

Yeah, was just wondering that same thing. That's a huge difference.

So... much... cash...
How will Edmonton ever hope to afford this?

Add me to the group hoping Sureloss will explain how entry level contracts work for these top end players. Are things negotiated or are they pretty much set in stone depending on where you are drafted?

Not unusual to be so much higher. Look at Drouin vs Lindholm and Monahan
Pretty much the same contracts for #3 vs #5/6 in their respective drafts

The Oilers are capped out with McDavid on an ELC...if they poop the bed for another 2 years they are absolutely screwed

I believe the bonuses are negotiated somewhat, but the base salary is pretty standard for certain draft positions.
Also, the reason Matthews hasn't signed yet is because Lou is pretty cheap when it comes to bonuses. I imagine there's a lot of back and forth going on there.

Its fairly normal.
Tkachuk 6th-1,775,000
Monahan 6th- 1,775,000
Lindholm 6th- 1,775,000
Virtanen 6th- 1,775,000
Zacha 6th- 1,775,000
Marner 4th-1,775,000
Bennett 4th- 3,225,000
S.Jones 4th- 3,225,000
G.Reinhart 4th- 3,275,000
A.Larsson 4th- 925,000
Johansen 4th- 1975,000
It's funny that there has been more variance in 4th overall than 6th.
Two of those are Lou signed contracts and happen to be the lowest for 4th overall as Muffins points out above.

925K is rookie max (70K in AHL). All these guys will get that.
Bonuses account for the rest. A and B bonuses, or something . Some are achievable, some really unlikely. Pretty standard stuff.

The max base salary for an ELC is always $925k. Everything on top of that is always bonus money.
But I believe the bonus amounts are negotiable.

If I was Matthews I would demand max rookie salary/bonuses. The Leafs would look quite stupid if they refuse to sign the #1 overall draft pick because they were cheaping out on bonuses.

Tkachuk has no Schedule B bonuses, which are for winning big league awards (the Calder doesn't qualify for B bonuses) or finishing top-10 in league scoring for your position. It's very rare for a player on his ELC to earn a B level bonus (Johnny would have received his for finishing top-10 last season).
Typically only the top 4 or 5 picks in any draft class get any or all of the B bonuses on their ELCs. Players who are coming into the NHL as college free agents often get the full bonuses because they have more leverage to ask for them or sign somewhere else.
Tkachuk signed the same ELC as Monahan, which is the maximum salary, signing bonus, and Schedule A bonuses (which are for individual performance measured against the other players on the team). Both were 6th overall picks.
Bennett, as the #4 pick, received some B bonuses on his contract, but not the maximum.
It varies from year-to-year, but typically, only the first and second picks in the draft get full maximum level A & B bonuses. After that, players still usually get the maximum A bonuses, but reduced or no B bonuses.
If you look at last season: McDavid and Eichel both received maximum A & B bonuses; Strome received a reduced number of B bonuses; and Marner only got A level bonuses. In 2014, Ekblad is the only one with maximum bonuses; Reinhart received slightly less; Draisaitl slightly less than Reinhart; and Bennett slightly less than Draisaitl.
In the grand scheme of things, hardly any players actually receive the B level bonuses, so they're all actually going to make the same at the end of the day (depending on how many A bonuses they can earn).

Was Lou in Toronto for Marner?
Point well made with Lou and signing bonuses regardless, looking at Larsson.

According to the internet he'd been the GM in Toronto 5 days prior to the Marner signing.

Jesse Puljujarvi's $3.425M AAV is highest AAV for a #4 overall pick since 2005, $1.04M higher than average.
