At least 84 killed in terrorist attack in Nice, France

A truck rammed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the French Riviera city of Nice on Thursday night, killing at least 84 people in an apparent terrorist attack in which the driver also opened fire on revelers before being shot dead by police.

The truck struck the crowd after a fireworks display for the French national day on the Promenade des Anglais, a seaside walk in this southern French city. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced early Friday that in addition to the dead, another 18 people were in critical condition.

Witnesses described total chaos, with the crackle of gunfire and people screaming as they fled the scene. Graphic video and photographs flooding social media showed the bodies strewn for a mile along the boulevard where the truck plowed into the crowd. Revelers ran while sirens blared.

“I saw bodies flying,” recall witnesses to Nice attack

France has declared three days of mourning beginning Saturday and flags will fly at half-mast.

Christian Estrosi, president of the regional council told French television channel BFM TV that “the driver fired on the crowd” and his behavior appeared to be “completely premeditated.” He said more than 10 children were killed in the attack.

A police source confirmed to Reuters the suspect was a 31-year-old French-Tunisian man born in Tunisia who was known to French police for committing common crimes but was not known to outside intelligence sources.

The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident "an attack".

Some reports spoke of shots being exchanged between police and the occupants of the lorry but these have not been confirmed.

I'm trying to think of a packed area in Calgary. Say the olympic plaza celebrations for remembrance day.

If I had to pick places on earth that are not prepared to handle events like this, it would be the Nices and StTropez's of the world.

Scares me to think of a truck as a deadly weapon.

No, I meant it seems high...would think it would either be slowed down/stopped, or enough people would be able to get out of the way.

It was a Bastille Day celebration (think thousands of people just like a big July 4th celebration) on a huge boardwalk area in Nice. There's basically hotels and buildings on one side and a street/boardwalk/seawall thing before the beach on the other. Depending on how many people were there, you might not be able to move much. Also, a truck of that size has significantly more mass and energy than 60 people.

We were in Nice last year, and that place is pretty packed on any random day...during a festival it must've been pretty crazy.

Ugh, so tired of these stories. So much needless hate in this world.

At least 73 dead, driver shot dead. What on earth kind of truck was this? A commercial van of some sort? The number seems insane.
