Former Jets pick, Zach Yuen scores first KHL goal as a Chinese Player!

Earlier this season, Zach Yuen, a player for Kunlun Red Star of the KHL, recorded a point in a game which just so happened to be the first point ever recorded by a Chinese player in the KHL.

Then, Thursday, Yuen doubled down in the history department by becoming the first Chinese player to score a goal in the KHL. The 23-year-old defenceman accomplished the feat against Amur Khabarovsk and the goal actually turned out to be the game-winner.

I lived in Changchun, Jilin province for two years and played more hockey there, on outdoor rinks, than I ever did in Canada. Lots of Chinese playing hockey up there.

As a proud CBC and Chinese person in general, this makes me extremely happy. It may be a while, but nothing would make me prouder of my heritage to see more Chinese or Asians in the NHL.

Random musing. When Lethbridge played Regina in the WHL playoffs last year, I fanboyed pretty hard when I realized that Lethbridge's captain was half Chinese. haha.

Not sure if Yuen embraces his culture or not, or can even speak his language or not, but about the only way he is going to have an impact on Chinese hockey is to go play in China. Guess he is in the right place.

I don't think Tavares is having any impact on the Portuguese Ice Hockey scene - probably just making up for Ribeiro's impact. Not sure how much of an impact Kariya had in Japan - anyone know?

I think you pretty much have to be a superstar, and embrace your culture completely in order to have a real impact.

Good for him to continue his career. I remember he was considered a fairly good prospect that seemed to have an NHL future, and then just disappeared. An interesting story to follow for sure.
