Interesting. Zibenejad has more upside, Brassard is more proven/polished. I think both teams make out well. Value wise the Rangers win as I would prefer Zibenejad over Brassard anyways, never mind the 2nd.

Wow, I'd have expected the picks to be the other away around. Interesting shake up for both teams.

Must be a pretty good trade for both teams since both fanbases think it's a terrible trade for their side.

Melnyk factor:
Аrpon Basu @ArponBasu
Brassard received a $2 million signing bonus July 1, so he has a $5 million cap hit, but has $10.5 million in salary over three years left

Surprised that NY also gets a 2nd out of the deal while sheding cap space at the same time.

I think I like this better for the Rangers. Younger player, with a lower cap hit for this year, and similar production. Zibanejad is an RFA at the end of the season. And the Rangers got the 2nd round pick too.

I don't understand the Senators. First the Phaneuf trade, then this.

what the.... why did the sens have to throw in a 2nd rounder?!?
is this a winger/center value thing (assume brassard still plays center, and Zibanejad is on the wing??)

I don't like it for Ottawa strictly because they added a 2nd.
And seriously what is the point in the 7th round pick being added.

This trade doesn't make any sense for Ottawa. Picks should at least be the other way around.

Jason Gregor @JasonGregor
Brassard last two years:
46-72-118 in 160 GP
Zibanejad last two years:
41-56-97 in 161 GP
Brassard turns 29 in Sept. Six years older. #NHL

Wow. Why did Ottawa agree to this? Taking back an older player, on a contract for more money and paying a 2nd for the privilege?

The Rangers do a great job of selling off the veteran guys they have for really good trade returns. Between this and compliance buyouts, they always have a way to get around any cap mistakes they make.
I wouldn't call Brassard a mistake though, as it turns out he was a hell of an acquisition for them, but they've managed to sell him high and the savings will help them manage some of the other less attractive deals they have on the books.
