Matthews and Nylander look like the same type to me, Tonnes of talent, they either get too high or too low, They've been taught this in the ice follies in Switzerland and Sweden. lets put it this way, after a loss you won't them in a frenzy, tears, and breaking sticks over goal posts like Doug Gilmore.
never really agreed with this sentiment the first time he complained about it a few years back, makes even less sense when you consider Mathews is the consensus #1 pick this year, and Nylander has looked like a solid blue chip prospect.
That being said, outside the first round, the leafs had a really questionable draft from rounds 2-7. Lots of size and lots of overagers selected.... maybe some young canadians, or anyone else, may have left the critics a bit less critical.
He has seem a few games in his life and is worried about a compete level of these players.
Doug Gilmour had it in spades and was very good. I think you should listen to his wisdom.
On the other hand.....he has won no Stanley cups as far as I remember.........................
Using Gilmour as a comparison speaks volumes. If he hasn't seen anyone "care" that much in the past 20 years or however long it's been since Gilmour retired then he either isn't paying attention or holds Gilmour up to a standard that no one will ever meet.
I'm starting to feel sorry for the guy, he just seems like a lonely old man complaining and saying questionable things just so people will talk to him. He really doesn't seem to know much about today's game.

Another issue I have of Cherry outside of this topic is his political rants. We get enough of that daily without having to hear an angry old man spew his political ideals during a hockey show.

This is the first time I've seen anyone question Matthews' compete level. I think I'll take the assessment of 50+ hockey scouts and analysts over Cherry's.

For better or worse, there is a big market in this country for that stuff. Cherry is a product of the CBC, and for a long time now they've skewed older and more rural in their audience.

i used to love Cherry. but along the way his rants lost focus and resonance, they are just stupid comments now.
he should have retired about 5 years ago.
he's irrelevant now. his racism is seriously not ok either.
He's not racist. I think you are confusing terms there. At worst he is biased towards the Leafs, Bruins, and a stereotypical 70s personification of what a real hockey player is (tough, passionate, and fearless).
I never really understood the hate for Cherry. If you take him for what he is - a larger than life personality and talking head - there really isn't a whole lot of substantial reason for the anger. He sees the hockey world in a different way than most modern audiences, but it isn't malicious and really doesn't qualify the majority of derision.
Like it or not, even though his preferences might be a bit antiquated, he still really sees the game well and can analyze and break down plays with the best of them.

I think people are mistaking chauvinism for racism. Cherry would absolutely be in the corner of a black kid who grew up in Hamilton over a white kid from Minnesota.

That sounds more like Nationalism over Chauvinism to me. Not that it makes it ok. Don Cherry is terrible.
