Ovechkin reaches 1000 points.
Feels like yesterday he entered the league. Great career so far and congrats to a great milestone.
He scored 35 seconds in to the game tonight.

What's insane is that Crosby is at 982 pts @ 740 GP
Ovi hit 1000 pts @ 880 GP
Ovi is and has been a legit weapon through the years and even though it will take him 160 more games to do it I'm kinda happy for him that he hit 1000 pts first! He had to beat Crosby at something... Technically.
Has 180 more goals though which is amazing... Dude is still only 31 and has the 3rd most goals out of active players (Iginla is 2nd and 38 years old, Jagr is 1st and 100 years old) and currently 29th all time - just past the rocket with that goal/1000th point!

Mike Bossy would certainly beg to differ.

If Ovechkin played in Bossy's era he might have been a goal/game. I'm barely exaggerating, to consistently score 50 goals in the modern era with goalies as good as they are and the defensive structures coaches use is not an easy task.

The greatest goal scorer of all time for my money. In today's NHL, his consistent goal scoring is simply amazing.
The first player to score all 1,000 points in the 21st century. Crosby has the points/game, but Ovechkin's goal scoring is something to behold.
Congratulations to the Great(est) 8.

Yup. Here are the most efficient goal scorers
http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/recor...e-leaders.html
Now in 78-79, there were 7 players with over 100 pt seasons.
8 players with >100pts the next season
12 players in 1981-82
13 the year after
During 1981-82, only 3 goalies had less than 3 GA/A. The Veizna winner was a 2.97 GA/A goaltender!!
Bossy regularly played in a league where there was 7-10 Fifty goal scorers each season. Ovi plays in a league where there's 1-3. Ovi plays in a league where goalies are less than 2GA/A.
The fact that Ovi is remotely as efficient at goal scoring per game as Bossy in today's hockey suggests Ovi is the better pure goal scorer

Yeah, I've never bought into that 70's athletes were better than todays. Today there's so much technology and science behind athletes from a young age. Sports back then was pretty passive. Plus the game, while not in its infancy, was still developing. See goaltenders as the prime example of how bad it was back then. Then like you said, the coaching aspect improving, as well of the size of today's players, and you can't compare the two. You're already seeing the next breed with a guy like McDavid being like Crosby, but with size. Interesting to see if the next era after will be a McDavid with a powerforward ability. Over time, competition gets higher and the game evolves. No way yesteryear's athletes can be put in the same comparison.

Kris Draper 4 Cups Ovechkin 0. Therefore Draper > Ovechkin, right?
Cups are team achievements, and Crosby arguably wasn't even the best player during their runs. I'm not taking anything away from Crosby in this post, but it annoys me when people are like "OMG Ovi no Cups and no Olympic golds. Look at Crosby".
Ovechkin has incredible individual achievements, and Crosby being Crosby should take anything away from that.

To me, that's the most surprising stat, considering he didn't play his first NHL game until the fall of 2005.

one thing that amazes me about guys like ovechkin and hull is how the score a lot of goals from the same area of the ice. everyone knows that, yet they are still hard to stop
