Anyone interested in him as a potential cheap option on the wing?

Edmonton should bring back the 7 year 49 million offer.

I'd be fine if Treliving gave him a chance.
He was going to make 7.5M this year, understandably why people would balk at him. But he's also good for 20-20 and is only 2 years away from 68 points. He would inject some skill into the lineup. Might not be the most effective 2 way or hard working player, but he's a better option in the top 6 than a lot of the wingers that may make the cut.

At first I thought about it but ..... meh. Wouldn't it be like replacing Raymond with a more skilled, but lazier Raymond?

No, because Vanek can still play in the NHL.
Last year, 18-23-41.
The year before, 21-31-52.
He'd be playing for a future contract, motivation could be there. I wouldn't say that Raymond is a very good comparable, he just wasn't good enough. 41 points would have put him only behind Gaudreau and Colborne in winger scoring for the Flames last year.
Of course it would depend on the price, but a skilled winger capable of playing on the PP and generating offense. Meh, I see far more advantages than disadvantages.

To put that into perspective, Milan Lucic turned down a $6M/4 contract with the LA Kings after notching a 55 point season.
NHL GMs are out their damned minds.

That's what I said, more skilled.
But, Raymond the year before Calgary signed him: 45 points. Vanek this year: 41 points (in 8 less games, mind you)
Someone will offer him a contract I just don't want it to be us

Honestly, I'd be happy if the Flames signed Vanek if it were:
1-year deal.
$2 million or less
We could play him on the right side. TSN has him listed as a LW/RW (he shoots right).
He's still got talent and in the right spot, could flourish.....it's just a matter of focusing him.
My concern would be that going "home" to Minnesota and signing with the team his best friend (Pomenville) plays on should've rejuvenated him from his time in NYI & Mon. It didn't.
That said, I think someone will still foolishly sign him to $4+ million. <cough>Chiarelli<cough>

One or two years at $2M/year and I'd be happy with that for sure, but he won't do that. He'll get at least double that from somebody else. That is not a risk I'd want Treliving to make. We want guys who can work hard and use their talents to help make the Flames a contender, not guys who may or may not work out as a "reclamation" project.

It was $50M.
Supposedly the Islanders offered him that same 7 year $50M deal when they traded for him and he turned it down.

If that is true, then either he really wanted to go to Minnesota(or get out of Long Island) or he didn't think that through.
