Flames 2011 Re-draft: Gaudreau makes big jump to #1

https://www.nhl.com/news/2011-nhl-re...?tid=277764372

This is so much win that I had to share.

Oilers are no good.

Also Jyrki Jokipakka moves up to 30th from 195th, while Dougie drops back one spot from 9th to 10th.

I actually think it's too early to judge that draft. I think six full seasons post-draft makes more sense. For instance this last year, Kuznetsov who was drafted in 2010, had his breakout season with 77 points. Stephen Johns just had his breakouts towards the very end of the year.

However, I do think Schefele is too low on that one. It'd take him over RNH, Coutourier, Huberdeau, Gibson, Landeskog, and Saad.

Going back and redrafting is one of the reasons I never get caught up in the whole ranking hype and trying to debate about what package we should give up in order to move up a couple spots. Years later the draft rank is ALWAYS different. There is absolutely no guarantee that the rank order we see now will be the same a couple years later. And yet so many people get caught up labeling certain players what they think they are and why we should take them.

The draft is such a crap shoot. Just pray you have as many bullets in your chamber as you can get and hope you get something good.

It's amazing how many first rounders dropped completely out of the first round.
I know hindsight is hugely beneficial, but 2011 has to be an outlier for either really poor scouting or a really deep talent pool.

Usually 50% of 1st rounders fail, and half the first rounders fell in their re-rates.

I wouldn't necessarily write off several of them though.

It's so satisfying to think of Edmonton's degree of failure that year and the amount of spastic e-chest beating Oiler fans did when drafting Nugent-Hopkins at #1 only to have the Flames select the best player in the draft at pick #104.

Stupid Oilers.

Tyler Biggs sure was a great pick by Burke. Glad the Leafs traded up 17 spots to get him!

It's still ridiculous to think that a 150 pound guy can dominate the ice. Sometimes it seems unbelievable and defies common logic.

That's okay, I'm sure that the Ducks didn't draft anyone with those picks.

22 (Biggs) for 30 (Rakell) and 39 (Gibson)

Oh. Nevermind.

In all fairness, the GM on the trade floor is an extension of the amateur scouting staff making recommendations...

Johnny #1 and Hamilton the top D in the draft.

Also, Klefbom 24th and Jokipakka 30th - lol

I don't agree with Dougie dropping. If anything I'd bump him up ahead of Gibson and Couturier into 8th. Guy already has two 10+ goal / 40+ point seasons before he turned 23. As a Dman.

Agree. Brian Burke pick Tyler Biggs is no good.

Burke moved up 8 spots and Anaheim took Rakell and Gibson

Truculence! Pugnacity!

Ouch.

* at some point, a thorough review of Burke's good and bad moves over his career will be an interesting conversation.

Its funny because I have so many Oiler fan friends who would tell you still that Nugent- Hopkins is better. Losers

That group of fans appears to be getting smaller. It was funny reading the multiple Gaudreau vs Hall polls over the course of last season. Went from the classic "Hall AINEC" with massive poll wins for Hall to Johnny winning the last poll and most Oiler fans admitting he is the better player.
