Four years is weird for an RFA these days. It's not really a bridge length, and it's not long term either.

Edmonton could use Fowler or Lindholm. Now is there GM smart enough to give up on one of their so called "core" guys to get one of them?

Only tertiary knowledge of the expansion rules and how the Ducks are set up for it but man, the Oilers should be calling the Ducks every day until the expansion draft, try to make a move for one of their D.

Eric Stephens @icemancometh
Vatanen's deal is four years, $19.5 million. $5M in 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19. $4.5M in 2019-20.

That's a fair contract for both sides.
In semi-related news though:

Only if the Oilers retain (significant) salary. Ducks are a budget team

I hate them too, but they don't retain on Hall @ 6M. That's a very fair contract going forward.
On any other organization, Taylor Hall @ 6M would be one of the best contracts in the league, IMO.

Agreed, but the Ducks work with a budget, so they can't take on another big money contract very easily. If I was the Ducks GM and the Oilers approached me for Lindholm or Fowler, I would target the cost controlled options (Draisatl, Nurse, high draft picks) before considering Hall or RNH

And he has a NMC that they will be forced to protect in the expansion draft.

How sweet it is. I think they have to protect Kesler also. Not as bad as Bieksa, but they are forced to keep the nucks stink on them.
Bonino sure would look great playing for the ducks right now..

You are correct, that makes more sense. He's older than I thought.

It's not a bad deal, but Hall's contract is not even remotely "one of the best contracts in the league."

Halls contract is a good contract. If he resigned today you don't get him for 6. I don't like him at all, but his contract gives him tremendous value. RNH and Eberle not so much.

You couldn't give me Taylor Hall if I was a GM. One dimensional scoring winger with low hockey IQ. Even more concerning for me is how he just quit giving a crap once the Oilers were starting to obviously be out of it. He has oodles of skill but the negatives for me for outweigh any positives. The Oilers should name him Captain.
