Check out the iPod Nano.
Nano
"Thinner than a standard #2 pencil and weighing only 1.5 ounces, iPod nano can hold up to 1,000 songs in its 4GB model and 500 songs in the configuration. It features optional accessories including lanyard headphones, which integrate the headphone cables into the lanyard, so users can wear their iPod nano around their neck without dangling headphone cables."
Damn. I just sent my mini back for repair and got a replacement last week. Should have waited longer for them to replace it with a Nano.
Dear Santa,
I would like to update my Christmas list to read Powerbook and Nano.

wow...impressive, most impressive...that is a pretty sweet device..I personally prefer larger hard drive players, but that size, with a color screen?? I am stunned.

I'd love for someone to have that in their pocket, sit down, and have it break in half....

I'm not in the loop here, is it true that you have to use their mp3's from itunes.com at a buck a piece? Or is there a way to use any mp3's on an Ipod?

You can use any mp3. But I think the catch is, you have to use iTunes to transfer the files to your iPod.

You can always hack your Ipod. You can even get it to run Linux if you're really nuts.. it's not that big of a deal. Just do some googling and you'll be fine.

Yeah its true but iTunes is a great app. Even if you dont have an iPod, iTunes is great for organizing, riping, mixing and burning CDs. Limewire is integrated with iTunes so your songs go right into the library. You can even share music libraries over the net. It's a great featur if you wanna listen to your music at a friends or at work/school.

You don't think you have to use iTunes. There are other downloadable shareware type programs that you can use but will have to pay for.

I bought my iPod a year ago and it might as well be surgically attached to my body. I don't go anywhere without it.
Only thing I don't like is that I have to keep a mirror on the hard drive. I went to my brother's place and had him add some songs from his collection to my iPod. He's running Linux, so we downloaded some freeware iPod apps to load the mp3s on and away we went. I got home, plugged the iPod into the computer, it said "Hey, these MP3s aren't in the mirror... I should delete these!" and all the songs were nicely erased from the iPod. It assumes that the mirror on the HD is the source and you can never have more songs on the iPod than you do on your HD. Which is really stupid considering that I have a 40G iPod, using 24G, and I really don't want to give up that drive space. (Yeah, I know, I can get a 250GB drive for little over $100, but I'm a cheap-ass SOB).

This seems odd to me. I also have a 40gig iPod and keep no MP3's on my HD.
I've never had this problem. I think all you need to do is turn off the Autosync mode. That's the reason it auto updates from your iTunes library.

Yes, I can take off auto-sync, but then how do you organize your songs? If I want to make a playlist like, "World's Finest Cheese" with "Ice, Ice Baby", "Macarana" and "I"m Too Sexy", how do I (A)create the playlist with an empty library, and (B)move the playlist to the iPod without wiping out the songs?
EDIT: Maybe a better example would be "Best of Hair" with "Rock You Like a Hurricane", "Kickstart my Heart", and "Round and Round". :P

Choose iPod on left "source" menu.
Then go file-new playlist.
It will make an empty playlist directly onto the ipod, and not the itunes library.
Then just drag and drop onto that playlist and rearrange as you wish.
If autosync is off, I don't think it will ever wipe out anything. Never has for me.
The only problem I have had with not keeping mirrored songs on my HD, is that itunes will not let me send songs back to my PC from the ipod. Therefore if I want to move back some MP3s to burn a CD or something, I have to use a shareware program.

It only syncs with your computer-->iPod and not the other way around because it's part of the agreement they have with record companies to help curb music stealing. Its a small price to pay IMO.You may be able to get around it by enabling disk use, copying actual files over the copy back to the desktop on your computer, import into iTunes then sync. Never tried this though.
