Icon24 Blackhawks will have $3.07 million in bonus overages for next season

https://theathletic.com/2016/06/16/b...y-cap-overage/

Quote:
The Blackhawks have more than just salary cap hit amounts to compile when figuring out how to get under the cap ceiling for the 2016-17 season.

The Blackhawks also have to take into account their salary cap overage from the 2015-16 season: $3.07 million, according to Blackhawks assistant general manager Norm Maciver on Thursday.

The Blackhawks’ overage amount consists of bonuses earned by Artemi Panarin, Teuvo Teravianen and Michal Rozsival.

The Blackhawks have about $66 million already committed to next season’s cap with 16 players signed, last season’s overage and the retained cap hit of Rob Scuderi. The cap ceiling last season was $71.4 million. The NHL is expected to announce the 2016-17 cap ceiling early next week.

“[The overage] certainly factors in,” said Maciver, who was attending a press conference to announce a contract extension with AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs. “We still haven’t found out what the number is going to be for next year. Once we get the information about what the cap number will be next year, it’ll certainly give us a little clearer picture as to how things might look for us come September. Until we get that number, we still got some things up in the air. We’ll hopefully have a clear picture by the draft when we know what the number will be.”

The Blackhawks faced a similar situation last season, but the overage was quite smaller. The Blackhawks had an overage of $750,000 after the 2014-15 season.

Good. They luck out and get to sign a 24 year old UFA to an ELC, then he goes on to put up 77 points. They should get dinged somehow.

Man, Toews $10.5M cap hit is going to be an anchor in 3-5 years. Still 7 years remaining.

Queue the "Trade Crawford" rumors.

And I can almost hear Oiler fans dreaming of acquiring Seabrook.

Maybe the Blackhawks should hire whoever manages Carolina's salary cap.

Contract wise? They signed him to a 2 year ELC last summer, so he has a year left at $812k. That's why I hope these bonus overages sink them somehow.

No. The Calder doesn't qualify for additional team bonuses. Depending on how his contract is structured, he may have maxed-out his "B" bonuses just by finishing top-10 in points by forwards.

At least they have the cups to show for it. Makes it worth it IMO. Flames will need to win a cup or two to make me feel the same way about the Gio deal.

So the overage essentially lowers the ceiling for the Hawks next season, is that right? Or if you prefer, it counts towards their cap hit but they don't get a player out of it.

Like if the ceiling next season remains unchanged at $71.4M, the Blackhawks can commit $68.33 towards player salaries in 16-17? Meaning that as things stand now, the team has $2.33M to commit to six more players to fill their roster while remaining cap compliant?

Pretty much yeap, and Shaw himself will probably get more than the $2.3 million in space they have left.

How many years left on Hossas deal? I feel like he can be on the way out of CHI for a song.

5 left and he's already 37 and declining rapidly.

He's a recapture risk as well IIRC, and he has a full NMC.

EDIT: Someone way smarter than me like sureloss or getbak will have to explain the cap recapture penalties for Hossa, and whether or not they apply to any team that trades for him. I'm pretty sure they are significant though, so if he retires early someone is getting hammered.
