Canes re-sign Cam Ward to 2 year deal (3.3mil AAV)
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Cam Ward is on the verge of signing a two-year contract extension with CAR.

and then there was one...UFA goalie. And one less team looking. Good for the Flames.

Ha ha ha. Boomer was just a half hour ago tooting his buddy Ward's horn saying he would take Ward over Reimer any day of the week and how good he could be on the Flames. Sorry Boomer but no more aging veteran stopgaps for this team.

Boomer and Pinder have been arguing about him for the last 2 days. They can now put it to rest. (Boomer wanted the Flames to sign him if he was there on July 1st, Pinder was totally against it).

One of the few teams looking for a starting goaltender out of the market and they take an underwhelming UFA goalie with them. Excellent.

I'd rather have Reimer. And I don't like Reimer.

Pinder is kind of out there at times but he was clearly right on this one. There's no upside to Ward whatsoever and if you sign him on July 1st you are simply hoping his body holds up and he can maintain a semblance of the goaltender he used to be.

Im in the Pinder camp. Wards game has slipped over the last fews years and I dont ever see him being what he was when he broke into the league. Too bad because he was Elite.. WAS...
Thank god he got signed and not with the Flames.

Glad he is being signed by Carolina. Did NOT want him on the Flames whatsoever. One less possible mistake for Treliving to make. Thanks Carolina!

Ricardo needs to tell us how this is a much better rebuild move. And blame Frolik.

Pretty sure Ward is a viable veteran backup, this is a good move by the Canes I think. Could potentially turn out like Ramo last year but Ward is not finished as an NHL goalie.

Ward has lived off the reputation from one playoff run for his entire career. Glad there will be one less team involved in the goalie hunt.

I agree. His numbers are not at all impressive in any season. Very average goalie overall and a below average starter.

That could be true, but what would you sign a back-up for? $2.0-2.5 mil? I think he will get considerably more than that.

Teams that could potentially go after a goalie
Buffalo - Backup, may promote prospect
Dallas - although it is extremely doubtful unless they shed one of the other guys
Nashville - Backup, may promote prospect
New Jersey - Backup, may promote prospect
Pittsburgh - Backup if they deal a goalie
San Jose - Backup
Toronto - Starter
Odds are that Reimer will not return to Toronto. So the only place he can be a starter is here and maybe Buffalo depending on their views of Lehner. If he wants to sign as a backup, those other teams all make sense.

Don't forget Edmonton will likely sign a backup.
