Flames Upcoming Free Agent Frenzy

FA Frenzy is around the corner, and there is an extensive list with a few solid high profile names. To name a few: Steven Stamkos, Kyle Okposo, Andrew Ladd, David Backes, Milan Lucic, etc.

Glaring needs for the Flames are Goaltending, RW, and possibly NHL D depth. The Flames have yet to sign Nakladal on D

Full list here: [Spoiler for Size]
Spoiler!

Who should the Flames target, if anyone at all? Discuss

Cowen on waivers for buyout purposes.

No surprise but there's Cowan. Will be interesting to see if a team will make a reclamaition project out of him.

Andy Strickland
Andy Strickland – ‏@andystrickland

Sounds like #Preds goalie Carter Hutton is leaning towards free agency on July 1...Nashville would like to re-sign him

Target Reimer if we have not traded for a goalie by then. Otherwise stay away from UFA and stay the course

From the big names, I'm only interested in Stamkos, Perron, Hamhuis, and Reimer. A lot of the bigger names in FA this year have some serious question marks even before they sign their overpaid deals.

Is it ridiculous to want to re-sign Hudler to a short term deal? I've had a soft spot for him ever since his words about being a leader to the young Flames at the Awards ceremony last year.

Yes, yes it is. I honestly think people are bat poop crazy when they suggest bringing back guys like Hudler, Ramo or Jones. Time to move on.

From that list I'm not sure who I'd like them to sign. Have to think they would consider bringing back Nakladakl

The only UFA I think Calgary should target is Reimer, and since we can guarantee him a starters job I think Calgary would be attractive to him as well. UFA's like Steven Stamkos, Kyle Okposo, Andrew Ladd, David Backes and Milan Lucic would either be to expensive or not interested in Calgary IMHO.

What about Eric Staal on a short term reclamation project? Big and can win faceoffs. I wouldn't mind him on a reasonable 1-2 year deal. We're a high scoring team on the rise, so he might be interested.

If theres a way to get a top flight guy like Lucic, I think it would be good but the Flames can't get into a bidding war. I'd like a guy like Perron or Martin or McGuinn because I think they'll actually be decent and not overly expensive.

No to bringing back Russell too!

If the Flames didn't have so much cap space tied up in crappy depth players there are a few I'd want them to target.

If they can't snag a big name goalie through a trade, then Reimer is a must have IMO.

If they can clear out Wideman I would take Hamhuis on a cheap 2/3 year deal if possible. He's still a quality top 4 Dman to round out the top 4 and losing him in an expansion draft would be acceptable as well in my eyes. He'd be a great partner for Hamilton and could hold the fort until we start to see Andersson and/or Kylington emerge.

Ideally my steps on D would go this way:

1. Trade Wideman
2. Sign Hamhuis ($3 million?)
3. Trade Engelland
4. Sign Nakladal ($1 million?)

Giordano - Brodie
Hamhuis - Hamilton
Jokipakka - Nakladal
Wotherspoon

Smid LTIR

Good luck I suppose.

Up front there is no wiggle room, most improvements will likely have to come internally unless BT can work some magic.

Perron might be one of the best bang for buck type signings as a complimentary winger for the top line. Probably could be signed for about $4 million I would guess, still under 30, right shot and could probably put up 50ish points on the top line.

After watching the speed of the Pens, Boedker is really appealing right now. Only 26, lightning speed and a consistent 50 point winger. Left shot but plays RW too. If he could be had for roughly $4.5 that'd be great, but he probably gets more than that and the Flames as mentioned are up against it as is.

Like I've said before, if Lucic makes it to UFA I can see the Flames making a push for him. If you believe all the talk of truculence and getting bigger/meaner then he's pretty much a perfect fit for the Flames. Only problem would be the term combined with the risk of him declining rapidly.

No cap space. Also don't want to waste minutes playing an older depth player. Plus, don't waste assets trading away bad contracts. Offer larger contracts next year.

I hope it's a quiet free agency for the Flames this year.

I wonder if this is the end of the road for Bourque and Butler. Like Glencross will they even get camp invites?

It would take more than that to sign Hamhuis. At the very least the $4.5M he averaged last contract but likely in the range of $5-6M

Flames focus should...SHOULD be a top 6 FW and Goaltending only in the Add department.

I feel the Flames D corps is set and need to eject two players from the system. I.E Wideman and a couple others where they see fit. I really like Jokipakka and Nakladal as the bottom paring. No need to spend more money on D.

I highly doubt that. He's 33, doesn't put up big offensive numbers (IE he's more of a defensive Dman) and the cap is staying fairly flat. Those things don't usually equate to a big pay day.

If you're right though, then no thanks.
