The Canadian Decade
It sucks that no Canadian team made the playoffs this year, but the future is bright: - Winnipeg is loaded
- Calgary is headed up, faster than expected
- Toronto has a hill to climb but has good management and the right approach
- As no good as Edmonton is they will figure it out eventually
- Not sure which direction Ottawa or Montreal are heading
- Vancouver? yeah, ok
The dominant Pacific and Central teams are aging and the East is more wide open. I think we could easily see three or more Canadian teams being dominant around 2020 and have a good run of playoff and cup success.
Here's hoping for a Canadian Decade

No to Edmonton, Toronto or Vancouver having success. It's just not worth it.

You're right, Edmonton will eventually figure out how to get out of 7th in the Pacific. When Vegas is added they'll nestle right into the #8 spot.

I want every other Canadian team to crash and burn.
Calgary is the only Canadian team I want to succeed. Ever.

I swear, this is the only Canadian city where this type of viewpoint is in the majority. Maybe Edmonton too? Not sure. But definitely not the others.

Why should I be obligated to cheer for other Canadian cities? I want Calgary to be the best Canadian team without question.
Canadas team is Team Canada. The other Canadian NHL teams are just rivals that want to stop us from winning.

I know my particular post is not what a lot of people want to hear but my viewpoint is based a little different than some.
It has been 23 years and counting since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup. The drought has been going on for long enough and frankly a parade need to occur on Canadian soil. I am 31 years old and although I have vague memories of the 89 Cup run, I have in large part been a long suffering Canadian NHL hockey fan like so many in this country.
We like to talk about how hockey is "Canada's Game" and companies like Rogers will hype up Hometown Hockey and this god awful World Cup with slogans like "Canada didn't just invent hockey, hockey invented Canada" crap. We are being robbed of memories as a generation.
When I talk to fans of the Canadiens, Leafs, Oilers and to some extent Jet's fans you always hear these amazing stories, family memories, grassroots development, happy times when their teams were winning Cup's and in the Jet's case, WHA Championships.
If you look at the grass roots level when you have kids growing up without ever celebrating any high level of success for their hometown teams it can leave a lasting effect across ALL SPORTS. It's the fans that pay their hard earned money to support these teams through thick and thin and in some ways pay even more through direct and indirect subsidies to these teams for arena's and other projects.
Take the major pro sports in North America along with the global giant that is soccer (futbol) I find it kind of sad when we have had such little success in LEAGUE play and we have entire generations of Canadian soccer fans who cheer for other countries and teams because the product that we have here in Canada is so subpar (excluding women's soccer) How many people know someone who has a Canadian Passport yet they cheer for (insert country of choice) in soccer because that is where the family roots are??
At the end of the day I don't see any Canadain team winning the cup right away so the drought is going to continue but I will be the first to admit that if any Canadian team won it soon, I wouldn't have an issue with it as long as it wasn't at our expense in the finals. I think it's time that the fans got some return on their investment both financially & emotionally. Surely we have waited long enough.
Just my $.02

Nothing would be sweeter than the Flames fighting through Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg then Toronto to win the cup. Rivalries matter, real rivalries not just the no good kind

Almost every team that wins the cup is comprised of mainly Canadian players.
That's good enough for me.
Being happy to see a Canadian city win the cup is meaningless imo, and disgusting were it to be Vancouver, Edmonton or Toronto.

Everyone wants their team to be the best team, not just in Canada but in the league. Only fans in this city, it seems, are emotionally invested in seeing the other Canadian teams die in a fire.

If I had it my way the Flames would be the only Canadian based team to ever make the playoffs, never mind a Cup.

I don't think that's true. Pretty common that fans of other Canadian teams dislike the other Canadian teams. And everyone hates the Canucks.

Being in various other Canadian cities when the other teams have had their runs at the final, most are behind the idea of a cup north of the border. Even those who are against it don't seem to exude the pure venom I see here. It's like the defining characteristic of the fanbase, it wants to see rivals fail almost as much as the Flames to succeed.
Exceptions were the Canucks (and Calgary was, based on what I was reading from out of town since I was also here for most of it, by far the most vociferous about hating that 2011 Canucks team), and to a lesser extent the Sens, whose fans were really annoying in '07. Even then, the mood in Toronto wasn't even that negative. But the Habs, Flames, Oilers' deep playoff runs have been broadly supported.
I follow a lot of non-Calgary hockey people and listen to podcasts, etc, and it's almost a running joke when they get flamed (no pun intended) as to what part of Southern Alberta the hater is from.

Meh. We all follow a lot of hockey outside this city. Would suggest if you engage with fans on rival boards, where they are as passionate as we are, you would get the same affect.
As soon as you think one fan base is materially different/better/worse than another you are usually off the mark.

Agree to disagree; I definitely think different fan bases have their specific quirks and characteristics. Pretty obvious in Vancouver's case. And Toronto's, for that matter.

The only other Canadian team I don't mind is the Sens, and only then because they either don't have:
a) History with the Flames that makes me dislike them
b) Annoying and overbearing media coverage like Toronto and Montreal have.
Every other team either has a history with the Flames of some sort, and/or would be exceedingly annoying to hear about. Would be cheering for teams out of the US.

I don't really see what all the fuss is about with Canada not winning the Stanley Cup, pretty much every team is majority Canadian with the best players being Canadian.
Canadians proved to be the best when they won gold in the Olympics.

Before CP, I was a die hard flames fan but was also happy if any canadian team did well.
Now after CP, I despise the oilers, Canucks, and dislike the leafs.
So it must be all you guys lol.

The only team I care that does well is Calgary, but I'm not going to go around putting down the other Canadian clubs other than the occasional jab at the Oilers or Canucks. I don't wish the other Canadian teams well, or any ill-will. I just reallt don't care about them.
