In 2002, according to the story link below, the Calgary Humane Society took in 2,000 dogs, 6,000 cats, 300 rabbits, and 400 other animals.

They euthanize between five and ten cats a day the story says.

http://gauntlet.ucalgary.ca/a/story/6719

There are no-kill shelters around if you look and rescue agencies that provide foster homes until permanent homes can be found.

Get your dogs and cats spayed.

Where do they come from?

When we accepted Polly, who immediately lost her back two feet due to the abuse in a pet store we had rescued her from, she came with five kittens . . . . the previous 16 year-old young female owner didn't want the responsibility and had turned the whole kitten caboodle over to the pet store.

We found homes for four of the kittens and kept one.

Our stupid neighbours just got two more cats . . . . in seven years, by my count, they've had four previous ones, three of which appeared to have become coyote food and the fourth they backed a car over.

Our four cats are indoor . . . . although we allow our disabled one outside under constant supervision. She can't run away . . . . but caught a mouse on the deck the other day!!

I think the average outdoor cat lives about two years and, obviously, if unspayed can produce quite a lot of kittens. Our previous three indoor cats lived 15, 15 and nine years. There's a good lesson in that.

If I'm not mistaken, 50% of all puppies are given up by their original owners in the first year. Disposable beings.

Polly and Keeper, both owner surrenders to ourselves and the latter named ironically by her former owners, survey the valley as the sun goes down . . . . Polly has no back feet but can get around a little bit. She's never outside alone.

Cruelty towards animals comes in many different forms and the only thing probably worse than actual physical abuse is abandonment. People who take pets on and then change their minds about it when they have no real reason to, should be viewed in a similar light to those who abandon their own children. It's all a reflection on your personality and character if you ask me.

And yes, Cowperson is talented. Out of simple curiosity, do you do it professionally?

I agree Eddie, it does reflect a lot on a persons character.
I do have a question for you though.
What would you do if you came across a dog running a red light? Would you report him to the police?
I’m just kidding, I’m such a nerd, that actually seemed funny to me.

That's cuz it was funny (no offense EB)....simply because the rest of your post was so sincere.

In all seriousness I got my cat Mandy from StreetCats. She was rescued from the Stampede. Each year after the Stampede is over hundreds of street cards gather in the grounds because of all the food around. Anyhoo she had a broken leg and half an ear when they rescued her. But I'll tell you - she is the best can I've ever had. Doesn't beg, doesn't scratch. Just grateful to have a home and isn't going to do anything to fata it up.

How does your cat pass/shat in the litter box without his back legs?

Wow Cow!! That's a great photo, for real! I love the way they are looking in opposite directions and the lighting looks perfect.

If you can, you should try and use the burn tool in photoshop and your cat's white fur. It's quite bright and you might be able to bring out some detail in his fur.

Polly lost her back feet but not her back legs so she uses the litter box quite fine.

She walks fairly well, in a wobbly kind of way since one leg is longer than the other, and can scoot across grass or carpet fairly fast.

Its a little unnerving to hear the "thud, thud, thud" of skin covered bones hitting the marble floor or the wood deck though . . . . something you have to get used to.

Out of simple curiosity, do you do it professionally?

No . . . .

I did some things for the Heritage House people in Okotoks recently, gratis, taking some images for the Alberta Centennial Time Capsule . . . . and some of my flood pictures are on display there. . . . . and www.goldentales.ca which is for my godkids and niece and apparently the rest of the world judging from the entries in the guestbook. I'm just goofing around.

I'll take a look. Thanks.

That is a great picture.

My wife and I got our cat from the MEOW rescue foundation. The cat is fixed, has a tracing chip put in, and they keep the cat for a while so that they learn a few of its quirks. It gives you a better idea of the personality before you get it home.

Even after that, our cat developed an ear infection. MEOW covered the vet and medicine bill. I would recommend them to anyone who wanted a cat.

We really want a dog too, but with both of us working and only having a small yard, we didn't think it would be fair.

Hearing of people who dispose of pets just makes me sick. I'm not an extreme animal lover, but I just don't get how you could get rid of a creature who gives you so much and asks for so little in return.

Myself, I love dogs. They are simply great animals; when I go over to friends' I always bring treats for the dogs, and spend hours playing with them. One time my buddy's wife yelled at us; she thought it was the 2 dogs wrestling in the living room. Turns out it was me and one of the dogs; the other dog was just sitting there waiting his turn to play.

But I don't own a dog because I know my lifestyle would be mean to the dog. I'm away at work 11 hours a day, and often have things to do after work that keep me from getting home right away.

Maybe they need to make rules as to getting a pet; ie if you have had to give up a pet for no good reason, then you can't get another one.
