Flames Flames GM kept busy while in Russia at Worlds

http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hock...ssia-at-worlds

Quote:
Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving returned from the world hockey championship with a gold medal in his luggage.

He might need to have the shiny souvenir melted down to cover the long-distance charges on his cell-phone bill.

“Flames business didn’t stop while I was away,” said Treliving, one of the architects of Canada’s golden bunch at the worlds in Russia. “There’s been a lot of phone work. I’ve lost my voice, and it wasn’t necessarily from cheering our team on. I’ve had this thing glued to my ear for the past couple of weeks.”
Quote:
While in Russia, his day job simply became his night job.

Or his overnight job.

“It’s no different than being in your office — you’re doing the same work. It’s just that most of your work is being done in the middle of the night because of the time change,” Treliving said Monday, shortly after arriving back in the mountain time zone. “It was a nine-hour time change, so you’re basically half a day ahead. I was doing a lot of work at 2 or 3 a.m. over there, where it’s the middle of the day over here. That was really the only difference. You’re doing all the same work, it’s just that you’re doing it at odd hours.

“But getting out of town, it removes you a little bit, too,” he continued. “There are a lot of people that are interested in the (coaching) position, and it allowed me in some ways to get to a quiet place to do some real thinking and some real planning. You have some time to get deep in your thoughts.

“So that was unique and beneficial, but I would be lying if I said the body-clock after the first week wasn’t a bit upside-down. Everybody would be going to bed, and you’re like, ‘Ok, now it’s time to get going on my day job.’ ”
Quote:
So how goes that coaching search?

“We’ve talked about a few guys. We’ll speak with a few more. It’s progressing,” Treliving said. “I’ve got a pretty good handle on the people that are out there and I feel real comfortable with the profile we’ve built, in terms of the type of person that we’re looking for.

“And a lot of it isn’t necessarily the direct interviewing and all that stuff. It’s doing the homework. You can sit with a person and they can tell you all about themselves, but you can sometimes learn more doing homework (through) people they’ve been with, been around, good and bad experiences that they’ve had, people along the way that have had come in contact with them, and just getting different perspectives.

“It’s been a lot of due diligence.”
As per the article Treliving also went to Red Deer to watch the Memorial Cup after arriving back from Russia.

Flames will also start their amateur scouting meetings tomorrow.

It's refreshing having such a sharp GM managing the Flames!

Can't wait to see who he hires in the near future.

Wow... we are lucky to have this guy as our GM.
His work ethic is exemplary.

What does a GM for Team Canada even do for TC during the tournament?

Meh. He had three goalies on the roster at the start of the season and didn't bother to trade for a top 10 starter mid-season to fix the problem so he should be fired. Also, I've heard he's a slimy, weasely rat who is also a finky worm. Get rid of this guy already before he turns this team into Boston Pizza.

Plus, he waived Byron. What an a-hole.

You may want to invest in one of these.

You better take a knee and sit a couple plays out.

Probably more than the GM of an Olympic team or WJ team - the WHC is always adding players when their seasons end.

Sorry, didn't actively follow the tournament in Russia. Who got deleted from the roster with new additions, and how was that managed?

I don't think anyone was deleted from any rosters (nor can they be). Each team is allowed to have a maximum of 22 skaters and 3 goalies at the tournament (and dress up to 20 skaters and 2 goalies in each game). They just leave open roster spots at the start of the tournament to add players later on.

By the end of the tournament, Canada only had 21 skaters and 2 goalies on the team, so they could have added one more of each and still been good.

No disrespect to how hard Treliving works, but to read this article, he left Calgary after turfing Hartley 3 weeks ago, worked overnight regularly, and now is back 3 weeks later

Sure, I get it, there is a time change

But I don't really care how much he sleeps, just what his decision is and how good it turns out to be.

I don't even care how soon it is, just how well it works.

So what the guy works a lot. Many people do this in their line of work. Until he gets results then he has done nothing. For ever good move he has done he has also dropped the ball. A three headed goalie and leaving players in limbo after firing a coach with no immediate replacement are not accolades.
