In terms of "young cores" maybe not the best but we also have Mark Giordano, which all those teams would kill to add.

Monahan
Gaudreau
Bennett
Brodie
Giordano

Not at the top but this is pretty subjective. I'd probably put them in the middle.

For me the core looks like

Monahan
Gaudreau
Bennett
Brodie
Hamilton

Gio is definitely a core piece but left him off due to his age. A true evaluation of this core really depends on how Bennett develops. I think he will fulfill all expectations personally.

Edmonton's core is garbage until they prove otherwise, and they've been putting it together for 6 years now, even longer if you want to count Eberle as part of it.

Florida's is tough to beat, they are getting results quickly too.

Winnipeg's core you have listed there has a couple guys who are yet to play an NHL game. Tough to judge that one this early.

Same with Toronto's

You can't include Laine and not our #6 as that could potentially fix one of our biggest holes (top 6 wingers)

I will say that if Bennett and our #6 don't develop we'll be in trouble.

Considering Gio has a 6 year deal about to kick in he is no doubt part of the core. The only way he is not is if we are talking young core.

Tampa has a deadly core
Stamkos (?)
Kucherov
Johnson
Drouin(?)
Hedmen
Stralman
Whichever of their 2 goalies

The Leafs' core will look great with Stamkos and Tavares.

Monahan
Gaudreau
Bennett
Brodie
Hamilton

Of the ones you listed, Toronto and Edmonton's look like crap. Edmonton because they've proven time and time again, you're not winning anything without defence. Can you imagine that core without McDavid?

Toronto's is pretty weak as well. When Kadri is considered part of your core, it means you're not very good.

It's a very good and interesting question.

For me the Buffalo core is #1. O'Reilly, Eichel, Reinhart, Girgensons, Kane, Ristolainen, McCabe, Foligno, Lehner, Fasching, Larsson, Bogosian, Pysyk, Nelson plus the #8. It's well balanced with impact players at every position.

I'd have FLA, WPG and CGY after that, they have better balance between D and F than TOR or EDM do.

EDM has a lot of potential to turn it around if Chiarelli can make a few bold moves but that's left to be seen. TOR's core is younger and less filled out than the other teams. They need another top notch d-men.

Florida has arguably one of the best young cores in the NHL. They have a franchise dman and franchise centre Barkov/Ekblad that is very similar to a young Kopitar/Doughty. They also have very good supporting pieces. One this is for sure, Canada will have some very good teams in a few years.

Since Jagr seems to defy the space-time continuum, I think it's safe to add him to Florida's young core.

I also have a lot of faith in our scouting staff! I'm sure they'll pick up a gem like Datsyuk or even better.

Book it now, Par and Stupid said so.

While I agree that Edmonton''s core has proven nothing, that is true of most teams here, including the Flames. The Oilers do seem to have some pieces that they could trade out, if they ever figure out how. The Flames really don't. The issue with the Oilers is they should be head and shoulders above with all the high picks.

Boy Winnipeg lucked out winning the draft lottery. Without Laine their core looks good but not great.
