It's not that he's not good enough to play for the Flames. It's that he's not good enough to play on the Flames averaging well over 20 minutes per game and he's not good enough to occupy close to $5 million or more per season in cap space.

He got a ton of heat here unfortunately...
But there's no doubting his abilities and his place in the game.
He's very versatile and I think that's why people struggle where to put him but he can be a strong #4 d-man and patch up holes even higher for when injuries arise. e.g. the Klinger comment in the article - you wouldn't want him there full-time but for a short time it can work offensively.

Really it comes down to this.
And sometimes that truth sparked a lot of pro/con discussion, which looked damaging on the way out.

I liked him as a Flame. His struggles this year were a function of the team struggles, and not a reflection of his abilities as a d-man. Even the Captain had rough stretches this season when goaltending was shaky as hell.
I would have been pretty happy with Gio, Brodie, Hamilton and Russell as a top 4 next season, with Engelland and Nakladal the bottom pair.

Flames very clearly missed him once he got hurt and left. The #4 spot next year is going to be a continual problem.

Could you imagine Kris Russell patrolling our blueline for the next 6 years at $5.5M?
Go Kris Go! At least to the conference finals.
So long and thanks for all the picks!

I agree on the salary...but he was more than capable of 20 minutes on this team this year. He has played big time minutes with the best team in the west.

Big time minutes on the team with the worst GAA of all teams to make the playoffs? I can believe that.

I dont disagree, but the minutes come with the salary.
We didnt punt Kris Russell to the curb because hes a useless plug, we traded him because while he was a good player and by all accounts an awesome teammate, he wanted more money than the value management perceived he brought to the team over the long term.
Now, maybe other management disagree, but in our setup he just wasnt going to fit at those dollars or term.

I'd love Russell back, but it'd have to be at a reasonable price and I don't think it would be

I am more than happy with the trade trust me...its just funny how some people thought he was such a terrible player and now he is thriving on a top team playing top minutes. People around here thought Jaybo was a bum too and a year later he was winning a gold medal in Canada's top six at the Olympics. Sometimes we blame the wrong guys...anyway good for Kris

Besides the money his size does play a part in why he was traded. On some teams it isn't a problem but we already had the smallest defence in the league so he's better off with a bigger team and I'd say we are better off with a bigger defenceman. Fine player but it was time to go.

Kevin should be able to hold the spot until Rasmus, Brandon (Hickey) or Oliver are ready.

I still love Russell. I just think he would be a near elite 5th defencemen (yes, a weird term). He is the kind of guy you want on your bottom pairing who is incredibly versatile and is a leader. If one of the top 4 goes down to injury, you can trust Russell to step up and play big minutes for stretches.
It is just that as a 5th defencemen - even an 'elite' 5th defencemen - the contract I expect him to sign in the off-season will just be too rich. I also think at his size, playing top 4 for too long in the Western Conference is more difficult as he will be facing too many big forwards, and he seems to have trouble containing them along the boards or stopping a cycle.
But that article is correct - he is good on the PP, PK and can play big minutes. I just wouldn't want him to be the first choice in any of those categories, but would still love him on the Flames at up to Engelland money.
