Nbcsn posts best cable nhl season in 22 years, record opening playoff night
http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/nbcs...off-night.html
Always good news that Hockey is doing well in the states. While Canada's numbers may fall this year at least the Rogers deal is long term and I have no doubt Canada will bounce back.

Despite significant sports competition out there, NBC’s NHL coverage across its channels is posting ratings gains. Earlier this week, NBC announced that its regular season-coverage on NBCSN (94 games) pulled in 378,000 viewers on average, the best numbers for a full season of hockey on cable in 22 years and a eight percent boost over last year’s 349,000. The 11 NHL on NBC games also rose, climbing six per cent year over year and pulling in 1.545 million viewers on average. As NBC announced in a series of tweets Thursday, too, the first night of the Stanley Cup playoffs Wednesday drew record audiences:

Best playoff start viewership ever as well.

Last night’s Game 1 tripleheader on @NBCSN & @USA_Network produced BEST EVER NHL Stanley Cup Playoff Opening Night w 0.47 ON rating, up 15%

That's because there are no Canadian teams in the playoffs...

I'm sure there have been opening nights with no Canadian teams before. Doesn't explain the year long average as well.

Funny, I always knew Gretzky helped grow the game in the states when he went to LA, but it's either a major coincidence, or proof of his effect that 22 years ago was one of his last his that market and the last time there was record setting USA viewership.
...also a telling fact (if my math is right): he and the Kings played for the cup the year prior to those ratings, and NYR won it the year of those ratings. Two major markets heavily invested in their teams during successful years definitely helps.

NBCSN does an amazing job producing a top notch broadcast. I am not surprised at all by the ratings, they have slowly built up a quality show with excellent personalities.

So in 22 years the league is closer to getting back the viewership they had when Bettman took over.

Gary Bettman is very good at his job.
John Ziegler would not have been able to accomplish what Gary has.

Repeated for truth.
Easily the best broadcasts, by a fait margin.
I love watching NBCSN hockey, regardless of who is playing

It's just a shame nobody even realizes there's a channel called NBCSN.
Not only that, but the other games are on channels that are all over the map. USA network, CNBC, MSNBC, *insert NBC affiliate station here*...
There's just one channel the games are never on (until the Finals): NBC. That's the tragedy for me. I wish there was some national coverage of some of the more exciting series, if only to build a wider fan base. The first round is always the wildest hockey with the most upsets, since teams get more beat up and become more defensive as the playoffs go on. It's always the most fun round to watch unless your team is still in it, and I wish more people got to see that.

NBC will show a game on Sat. and Sun. and I think a doubleheader too on another weekend. That's the american way with the main network channel showing games only on the weekend. I think the NBA is like that with the first 2 rounds of the playoffs.
