Default Should the Flames buy anyone out this summer?

For potential buy out candidates:

Best option: Traded
2nd best option: Traded with salary retention
3rd best option: Kept and buried if the extra cap space isn't needed

If none of those are possible or work, then the buy out becomes necessary.

Personally I hope none of the listed players are on the Flames roster next year except Engelland (I won't cry if he's traded too though), but I'm hoping options #1, #2 are possible for all of them.

Not likely though, and I'm hoping the Flames need the cap space because BT is busy adding the pieces we need to become a playoff team again next season. That takes option #3 away too then. If that's the case then they will need to buy somebody out.

Also, IMO Engelland is NOT a buy out candidate. I think he could be traded quite easily but I know some here might not feel the same so I included him.

I also feel that Wideman is tradeable, but with his tough season including the season ending injury combined with a full NMC, I can see how many might feel buying him out could be the only option.

If you think any other Flames should be bought out besides the ones I've listed then IMO you need to have your head examined, because you may have suffered a concussion recently.

If bought out this summer: (June 15, 2016)
(#'s according to CapFriendly)

Raymond:
2016/17 cap hit: $1,050,000
2017/18 cap hit: $1,050,000

Smid:
2016/17 cap hit: $833,333
2017/18 cap hit: $1,333,333

Stajan:
2016/17 cap hit: $958,333
2017/18 cap hit: $1,958,333
2018/19 cap hit: $833,333
2019/20 cap hit: $833,333

Wideman:
2016/17 cap hit: $1,250,000
2017/18 cap hit: $2,000,000

Engelland:
2016/17 cap hit: $1,083,334
2017/18 cap hit: $916,667

4 of the contracts expire after this season - would rather they just eat the pain this year and then have cap space starting next season.

Stajan is the only one I would consider just since it has two years left - but I do wonder if he would be easier to move at 50% retained to a team needing center depth.

Raymond and Smid are the big ones for me. Both fairly useless on the team at this time.

Agreed with this. I'd rather they suck it up for one more year for the expiring contracts. Stajan's the only one I'd consider.

Engelland is totally serviceable as a bottom pairing dman. I'm still confident Wideman will have a bounceback year next year and we can unload him at the trade deadline for a mid round pick if needed.

Raymond, I'd give a chance to make the roster, but will send down to minors if he is crap again.

Smid, I'm not confident will play anymore after his last setback.

Stajan is the only one I'd actually consider - because he doesn't fit into the heavy bottom 6 that the team wants.

Everyone else - let expire this year, then go big n 17/18 when you have zero bad contracts (...please don't sign a bad contract this summer...)

Can't buyout Smid until he's medically cleared to play. We have no idea if he has been so I'm going to have to assume he hasn't and thus isn't eligible to be bought out.

I'm curious to see if a new coach could get more outta Raymond. I think there was some bad blood between Mason and Hartley.

I'd wait to buy out Stajan until after the expansion draft.

Frankly I think Hartley gave Raymond too long of a leash. IMO he should've been a healthy scratch for more games.

With management wanting us to play a heavier, more possession based style Raymond has zero place on this team. Raymond is an anti-possession player. He cannot maintain possession of the puck along the boards, cannot cycle, can't win board battles, can't win net front battles, and can't even finish on breakaways. He literally adds nothing. He subtracts from the team by being useless and having no role.

He's the most obvious buyout candidate for me as he is completely untradeable on that contract. Even Smid has better value to us or in trade if healthy.

I want this team to get better and will support what management does to get that done. If buying out one of those contracts helps land a player they otherwise could not get, and also fills a key need then I say do it!

It doesn't matter if we have Stajan on the roster come the expansion draft, he is not going to be protected one way or the other. If there is a min/max salary factor for the expansion draft, his salary may become useful.

Meant to pick Raymond & Stajan but could only choose one option. This is also with no consideration of the expansion draft.

IIRC, you can't buy out a player with a NMC.

You can buy out a player with a NMC. You just have to give them the option of being put on waivers or not before the buyout.

I think they should be patient for another year and not buy anyone out.

However, if Wideman must be protected in the draft, then he should be bought out.

I'd only but out a player(s) if we need to because of the cap. That would probably mean we are going to sign an expensive UFA. Otherwise just send Raymond back to the minors and leave everything else at the status quo.

Wideman could be a target depending on the expansion draft rules where we could be forced to protect him. I'd like him more as trade bait though. IIRC if he waives his no movement clause the new team doesn't need to keep it, so he would no longer need to be protected.

Is there a way I can edit the poll to allow for multiple options?

If not could a mod set that up?

I must have miss clicked when setting it up.
