Luck plays a big part in those free agent and late round draft picks, but aside from a couple messed up situations Yzerman has been a very good GM

Even that Paquette, Nesterov, and Marchesault. No name players that actually contribute. They seem to come out of no where

Don't really want to get into it but go look a their draft history. Stamkos first overall, Hedman second. Solid starting point, but look at since then. Since then in 6 drafts their drafted players have produced 560 points, the majority of which coming from Palat, Kucherov and a little bit of Namestnikov. Take out that draft year and they have 179 since they drafted Hedman, mostly from Connolly and Gudas who were drafted in 2010 and are no longer with the lighting. Since Stamkos, Kucherov is their only first or second round pick who has put up over .5 ppg in their NHL career.
They have a solid team but they are not a recipe for a rebuilding team by any means

I remember when Stralman was here for like 15 minutes in 2009. Seemed like a young D man with some skill and promise but for whom we just didn't have space in our stacked veteran D line-up. Funny how things all happen and stuff on this planet of earth.

Brodie and johnny are 4th round picks thats great but we have alot of meh players and prospects.

Not a winner today, by a long shot.
Detroit deserved the win and outplayed them thoroughly, in all aspects.

Sutter was too excited by the prospect of Staffan Kronwall patrolling the blue line...

I can't wait for the day when a team full of soft midgets and crappy goaltenders win the cup. Then suddenly everyone gets on-board that bandwagon as the type of team needed in order to build a winner.

I remember Stralman being here as well... unfortunately I remember Sutter cutting him loose not because of any "stacked veteran D line-up" but because despite every report from practice and performance in preseason he preferred Staffen Kronwall (seemingly based on nothing more then Kronwall's 6'5-ness). Sutter: Great Coach... but not so much of a GM in the later half of his tenure.

Brutal thread... The Lightning are far from a team that should be imitated.. Their first line is.. Their 2nd line? Their best player is.. Not producing.. Their goaltender's only playoff experience is getting hurt and playing a handful of games.
Their D is eating up too much cap room.
There is tons of talent on TB and sure they're gonna do some damage every year until they can't afford "the triplets" anymore.
They're about to lose thier franchise player to free agency and possibly their #1 goalie.
Next years edition and the years to follow are going to be very different than the current.
So this edition is what you think a team should be built like? And they havnt won a damn thing?
Queue the silly thread season..

The big mistake the Lightning have made is only signing their young star players to deals that take them right to UFA status.
There is no way all this Stamkos crap and distraction should be happening the way it did all year, and he shouldn't be going UFA at 26 years old.
And now, don't be surprised if the same thing happens all next season with Hedman set to go UFA at 26 as well.
Those are corner stone pieces that should have been locked up until their late 20's with long term deals from their last RFA contract.
I sure hope the Flames don't make that mistake with Gaudreau and Monahan.

Nikita Kucherov went 58th overall in 2011 ... the Flames picked 45th (Granlund) and 57th (Wotherspoon) in that second round. The 2011 draft was great for the Flames, but imagine if they took a defender at 45 and Kucherov at 57 instead of Granlund/Wotherspoon. Having both Kucherov and Gaudreau that year ... crazy.

My take on the Lightning is that they haven't worried much about size and just accumulated skilled players throughout their lineup. Now they ended up with some bigger guys but most of them were cheap.
Its a billion times easier to find 3rd/4th line guys than it is to find top 6 forwards or depth defenseman, so why do teams continue to attempt to draft these guys?

Some of it was luck/emergence. People forget Bishop wasn't even touted to be their solution in net. Tampa Bay signed Lindback to be that guy and obviously that did not pan out and Bishop emerged in the 13/14 season. I think you just need a few bullets in the barrel for goaltenders
