Markus Granlund signs 2 year extension in Vancouver

@VanCanucks
#Canucks sign Markus Granlund to a two-year extension.
Yep, the former Flame who we traded for Hunter Shinkaruk has been re-upped by the Canucks. The first few comments on the twitter page weren't exactly positive.
Post trade, Granlund had 3 points in 16 NHL games with the Canucks. Shinkaruk had 3 in 7 games with the Flames.
Would we have re-signed him in this off season? Hard to see it, given the fact we have Monahan, Bennett, Backlund and Stajan, plus Grant(possibly) and Jankowski trying to make the team. Looking like a very shrewd move on Treliving's part.

"Ahh the classic two year deal to protect against a team claiming him on waivers, when you send him down next year."
"why? Every time I see this guy play I think of what could have been with Shinkaruk"
"because we gave up a 1st rd pick to acquire him. #assetmanagement"

I always thought that Granlund wasn't quite good enough to be top 6 and not big, fast or tough enough for bottom 6. Maybe he has a role as a 3rd line C in the mold of Backlund (but not as good) on some team but really he's a tweener, and I seriously doubt he develops into anything more at this point. He's got some good smarts and is a good forechecker, but I never really saw it amounting to much and never saw the lethal shot that lots of CPers talked about.
Happy to see the Canucks making moves like this.

Good for Granlund. If he performs well, he may be able to parley his next contract into a starter home.

Sure we would have re-signed him. You just don't let an asset walk away as he was still one of our decent prospects.

Granlund is the center version of Baertschi, minus the entitlement issues Baertschi had when he was here.
Skilled guy, but may not have enough speed or size/strength to utilize his skill properly at the NHL level.
IMO

Feel bad for Granlund. He's a decent player, but he's going to be the whipping boy of Nuck fans for the next two years because of Benning overvaluing him in a trade deal.

It will be interesting to see how much they pay him, but I think he can certainly make that team. May not make them better...

Decent contract. Small dollars and short term, so it isnt terrible. But generally, hes not a guy thats going to move that team forward.

His AAV is below the threshold such that he won't count against the cap if he is assigned to the AHL.

He's no difference-maker like Shinkaruk projects to possibly be. But, he's a decent prospect, and he shouldn't have any difficulty making the 'Nucks.

I like the guy as a player, but his waiver status would have hung over camp like a death throng ... Calgary still has that issue with Wotherspoon.
that's the league now though.
You have x number of years to make the big club based on age and games played etc through the start of your career. If you don't make it you become a risk because it seems more of a loss when a draft pick walks away compared to a free agent signing.
Vancouver gets more pressure because they traded a recently selected first round pick for him, which is still puzzling.

Good for him. I like Granlund, and I think he is the type of prospect with a different career arc. Smart enough to find a place in the NHL early, but will take more time to develop his speed and his strength. Vancouver can afford to be way more patient with him than Calgary can.
With that being said, it was a good move for Calgary since he probably would have been passed with Calgary's depth in the pipeline, and it was a complete head-scratcher for the Canucks given their lack of highly-skilled prospects.

Guy seems like a decent depth player at worst, and that's what you pay for those.

Yeah doesn't seem like a terrible deal. Granlund can fill a spot on the roster.

Yup. I genuinely liked Granlund. But thanks to Dim Jim, he'll have that comparison to Shinkaruk (very unwarranted IMO) for the rest of his career and fans will turn on him.

So of the fans have already turned on him unfortunately. I like granlund 2 but the comparisons are ridiculous. I heard a story about the Canucks didn't like how shinkaruk was training and wanted him to train with there program. Shinkaruk was training with that dude who trains Crosby and a lot of NHL stars

It's nice to see Granlund get a chance to be a full-time NHLer. Hopefully, he plays well enough for the Canucks to finish 1 point out of the playoffs
