Default A Stats-Based Retrospective of the 2015-16 Flames

The 2015-16 season is over.

Mercifully.

However, that’s not to say that some players haven’t taken great strides this year. Other players have faltered, but a few more have surged. That said, let’s look at every player’s stats, and show how they’ve come from 2014-15. For all intents and purposes, we’re only looking at players who played more than one game last season. Each player will be examined by themselves. I will post one of these at a time, likely five per day.

Previous years’ stats in parentheses. Bold indicates career high. Top-50 in respective categories will be indicated in red.

Retrospective links (all link to posts in this thread):

#13 - Johnny Gaudreau
#23 - Sean Monahan
#5 - Mark Giordano

#13 - Johnny Gaudreau
Games Played: 79 - (80)
Goals: 30 17th - (24)
Assists: 48 9th - (40)
Points: 78 6th - (64)
P/GP: 0.99 10th - (0.8)

Johnny jumped up 14 points last year, emerging as a bonafide NHL superstar in only his sophomore season. Continuing the formidable tandem established in 2014-15 with Sean Monahan, Gaudreau obliterated his previous career-highs in all offensive categories. Though he just missed out on a point-per-game pace, Gaudreau took such a huge step forward in his development, and will be due a gigantic contract this summer.

Aligning center was an odd choice.

Not as odd as this, although at least this makes me always right

#23 - Sean Monahan
Games Played: 81 - (81)
Goals: 27 36th - (31)
Assists: 36 47th - (31)
Points: 63 27th - (62)
P/GP: 0.78 42nd - (0.77)

Sean Monahan was overshadowed somewhat by the aforementioned Gaudreau in 2015-16, but make no mistake - he’s a real star in this league. He established new career-highs in assists and points this year, and although he missed out on hitting the 30-goal plateau, he remains one of the most dynamic goal-scoring centres in the NHL. He should be set to blossom into a superstar in the coming seasons, one who could rival the best centres in the league.

#5 - Mark Giordano
Games Played: 82 - (61)
Goals: 21 - (11)
Assists: 35 - (37)
Points: 56 - (48)
P/GP: 0.68 - (0.77)

Though Mark Giordano couldn't repeat his Norris-calibre performance from 2014-15, his 2015-16 season was still one for the ages. His 21 goals, a career-high, was the most by any Flames defenseman since the days of Al MacInnis. He set a new career-high in points, as well. Gio had a rough start to the season, but really came on as the year ended. Next year, if he can play the whole season at full form, a playoff berth could come the Flames' way - as well as a Norris for their captain.

Geez, Gio's stats are pretty crazy, considering his bad start.

I think your Monahan stats from last year are wrong, he had more than 24 goals last year.

Yup, you're right - he had 31, forgot to replace Gaudreau's stats when I copied-and-pasted the template.
