Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Further to today’s recalls, the #Flames have sent Garnet Hathaway back to Stockton as per the AHL website.

I liked his game. Should be a useful 4th liner going forward. Mixes it up and clearly gets the opposition's best players off their game, decent speed and size.

I'm surprised by this move. Hathaway was doing what Bollig and Ferland are supposed to be doing. another young guy performing well that got caught in the numbers game?

He's pretty much Jooris, but 20 lbs heavier, and more pesky. Also cheaper for the time being.

I think they just want to give some other guys a look at this point in the season. All I've heard about Hathaway has been positive so by no means is this performance based

wow.

surprised by this.

Mind you, I think Treliving is all about Tank City right now, so removing a role player who is a positive will help the tank.

What? Why?

They were two of our best forwards.

Looks like they are just rotating prospects to see what they got.

Not necessarily because they were awful.

Definitely got a good look at both, and I really line what we have in them.

Time to see what else we have

People are going to lose it over Hathaway but I see this as Treliving wanting to get a look at as many guys as possible. I bet BT told Hathaway he did great and if he keeps playing the same way, he has an NHL future.

Yup. You can only dress 12 forwards. So if Grant and the others need to get in, guys like Hamilton and Hathaway need to step out. But they've both shown what they can give us. Positive press heading into next year.

The Flames now know what they have in Hathaway (and to an extent Hamilton). They now want to see what they have in Poirier, Shinkaruk, and Grant.

I would imagine Hathaway will, if he hasn't already, displaced one of those bottom line forwards. Good showing.

Hathaway has earned a great shot next season. Don't think he has anything else to prove this year. It will be next year where he will have to prove he can still be effective when the games matter.

Is Poirier auditioning for the same Hathaway "pest" spot?

Don't think so. Hathaway is likely a 4th liner on a good team, with an outside chance of being a 3rd liner but doesn't appear to bring much if any offence. Poirier is more a gritty middle-six forward with much more ability to contribute offensively.

Hathaway will be on the squad next year for sure. He has real top 5 pest potential.
