I remember we had a speeding thread here awhile back. IIRC, one of you lead footers had a great trick for beating a multanova ticket, or at least reducing it.

I managed to get myself a $255 ticket, but since its against my nature to roll over without a fight, I need some advice. I admit that I'm guilty, but I'd prefer not to pay the ticket. Think the judge'll accept an apology? Any advice for getting it reduced or quashed?

I'm going to throw in a little story here... I (somehow) managed to get myself a punk in drublic ticket last fall (don't ask). The last day to pay it was december 23, and naturally, I waited until the 23rd. When I got to Rocky Mountain Plaza, the line up for yellow tickets was about 15 people long, and the line up for the alternative (can't remember what that was) was empty. So I walked up to the lady in the alternate line wicket & said "I know I'm in the wrong line, but I just want to pay this ticket. I deserved it anyway. Can I pay this ticket here, please?".
She took the ticket around back for a couple of minutes, then came back, wrote 'negate' or something (again, I can't remember), gave me a wink & said merry christmas. I thanked her very much and proceeded to have a merry christmas.

The point of that story is that some of those people are very nice. I don't want to go down there & start BSing someone. I just want to know what's worked for you guys in the past for multanova tickets. I haven't gotten one in years.

yes, i have my moments...

the shiny license plate cover notwithstanding, multanova tickets can't be challenged the old easy way - of disputing and hoping the cop doesn't show up!

seriously, i have never beat one, but i've never got one either. luck of the draw. people get them for moving at traffic speed sometimes.

isn't there an advocacy croup or a bunch of lawyers trying to class-action this away? has anyone else heard of this or am i out to lunch?

yes.

it is mostly a money-grab, as the speeder is not stopped at the time.

i accept the argument that habit speeders will slow down after a ticket or two, but if that argument is used to put less cruisers on the street, we have trouble.

I've heard that multinovas have to be calibrated every few months, and that is something people have brought up in disputes. I have no idea if that is true or not.

Normally they will knock off a portion of the ticket for just showing up to dispute the fine.

Right. Then I believe that the way to fight one of those is to ask for the whole picture, and not just the snippet that has your vehicle in it.... those pictures are apparently huge, and hard to dig up. If said picture has other vehicles in it, you can fight it on the grounds that the speed clocked may be one from another vehicle. Basically, what I hear is that any photo radar ticket that has another vehicle in the picture has to be thrown out. WHich is why they send you the ticket in the mail with just the little picture thinking you won't be smart enough to ask to see the whole thing.

Mind you, if there are no other vehicles in the picture, you're hooped.

And I have no idea who you ask to see the whole picture.

Go down, in person, ask to speak to a justice of the peace (? - whoever it is down there that takes complaints/queries), don't use a BS story. Acknowledge that you were speeding, act contrite, but get to the point.
Those guys here everything under the sun...if you don't waste their time, but take the effort to go down there, they have been known to reduce the ticket and/or remove the demerits.
Something to that effect, my buddy's gf went down there and used the honest approach, and the guy thanked her for not going into some long sob story, and reduced the ticket by 60$ and removed the demerits.

Hmmm... Now that I think about it, the trick was to just show up and say something to the effect of "I may have been speeding, but there's no way I was going that fast. There must be something wrong here". Then they offer to cut it in half or something. That'd be fine by me because honestly, there's no way I was going 39k over the limit. 20k or maybe 25k over, but not 39k. My teenage years ended in the 90's.

EDIT: of course, the punk in drublic ticket implies otherwise... :P

I don't think there are any demerits with photo radar tickets. I had got a ticket earlier this year for doing 13 km over the limit. It turned out to be $85 or something like that. If you have the time go see the Justice of the Peace ask for a reduced ticket and he'll almost always do that for you. How much they reduce by is completly arbitrary. The only question is how much is your time worth. It'll take a couple of hours out of your day and you have to pay to park downtown.

The Justice will say something like, "The court offers to reduce the ticket by to $60, do you accept this offer?". I don't know what happens if you reject it. Maybe he'll reduce it more, or maybe you can choose to get a court date to fight it. When I went down to the courthouse back in March, they were booking court dates in December.

I work with a lady whose husband works in the multinova deprtment, and apparently there is not much you can do. The radar guns are set so that even if there are other cars in the picture, they are pointed directly at one lane only (the one you were most likely driving in) and are so accurate they are not influenced by the speed of cars around you.

There are no demerits associated with those tickets, so forget about gtting those dropped or using them as a negotiation tool.

I would say show up, be honest, and see if there is something you can do. Tell them you're speedometer is off due to the oversize tires on your truck, and you plan on getting it fixed. Apologize, and hope they will reduce the fine, but the possibility of beating it is pretty remote.

Or you could always pay me off and I could try and have your ticket "lost" in the mail...cash up front and no guarantees though :P
