Default Flames going hard after Yale goalie Alex Lyon UPDATE: Signs with Flyers

Per Damien cox,

Quote:
CGY trying hard to sign FA Yale goalie Alex Lyon. They're not alone, but haven't been told they're out of the running.
Quote:
Question is whether Lyon sees Jon Gillies and Mason McDonald already in the CGY system blocking his way.

Do we need another 22 year old goalie? Where would he even play?

Don't know anything about Lyon but it's good to see Treliving looking at all options. Can never have too many prospect goalies IMO!

Good! Gillies/Lyon Tandem for Stockton Next year. Nice development strategy! Please let this happen.

OK, this is intriguing. Just checked Lyon's stats at Yale. Holy crap.

As for the ‘question’, I don't see any reason why Mason McDonald should be blocking Lyon's way. Lyon is four years older, and McDonald is looking like a long shot at the moment. It seems more likely that McDonald would have to come in a few years from now and try to steal a job from Lyon.

He and Agostino overlapped for a season in 2013-2014. Maybe they're buddies.

The guy put up Jon Gillies numbers. If you can sign him for free, you mite as well. Especially with how spotty our goaltending is and we all know how goalies develop.

His stats are pretty fantastic, sure would be nice. Good to see Treliving at least looking at all options.

The Flames could always have McDonald play his overage season as well, which would remove one obstacle.

His stats are really impressive. He has improved every single year it seems. His competition is really only Gilles I think. Ideally, they would both push eachother in the AHL and would help stabilize the goalie position in a year or two.

McDonald is a long shot now? Tough crowd. I don't think many people thought much of Lyons when he was 19.

Most goalie prospects at 19 are long shots. Even at Gillies' age, it's not easy to predict which ones will pan out.

ECHL a much better option IMO. Having him in the Flames system under the Flames coaching and guidance is preferable to returning to the Q. We've seen how quickly injuries can happen so even if that's where he starts I'm sure he'll get Stockton time in.

How much control do NHL teams have over their ECHL affiliates?

I'd say barring injuries, McDonald is almost certain to start next season in the ECHL. Gillies should get the bulk of the starts in Stockton, who plays backup? Are they considering bringing back Poulin or Simpson as backup? If not, could be a spot for a guy like Lyon.

If we could score one of Pribyl or Lyon, it would be a big boost to the rebuild.

If we could somehow get both, then win one of the 3 lottery picks, well... I can't even!
