Default Mike Hoffman on his way out of Ottawa

Per elliote freedman on 30 thoughts:
9. Are we looking at the final 15 games of Mike Hoffman’s tenure in Ottawa? Sure looks like it. The winger was benched Saturday in Toronto, then played 13:46 the next night against Dallas. I talked about it with one agent (not Hoffman’s), who points out the contract power pendulum will switch from the club, which did very well in his arbitration case last summer, to the player. He is one year from unrestricted free agency, and can go to arbitration once again. This time, his resume is deeper, as he’s become one of the best even-strength scorers in the league. Unless the Senators believe in him enough to offer a lengthy extension, and their usage certainly indicates doubt, you can’t let him walk for nothing.

Flames were rumored to be scouting the Sens before the trade deadline were they not. Wonder if they may be interested.

Would love to add him to the Flames. 27 goals last year, and 25 already this year.

He has a cannon of a shot.

since their owners cheap they would probably want cost controlled prospects. Shinkuruk+andersson+one of our seconds?

edit: we would probably have to send some cap back.

I'd be reluctant to use Andersson in a trade at this point, but I'd trade Shinkaruk+ for Hoffman in a heartbeat.

Flames should try to capitalize on a dumb coach.

Sens are an absolute mess.

We'd just be getting negotiation rights? Can he play RW?
Looks like someone that would be nice to snag.

What do the sens need?

I will offer Raymond 90% retained + Smid 90% retained for the rights to negotiate with Hoffman

Not probably... Definitely. He'd be looking for what... 4 x 4.5M give or take?

So a picks & prospect package + Smid and Raymond (50% retained on Raymond) to even out the cap for next season (assuming they'd let us work out an extension prior to the deal being completed).

Can't retain more than 50%, and even if you could, why would Ottawa take that for a guy on pace for 35 goals?

There is a lot wrong with this.

First off... you can only retain 50% of someones salary. Secondly, why on earth would the senators do this ? Finally, i am not sure you can offer stuff for teams to negotiate with their pending RFAs.

Its just for his rights. If they're confident that they cant re-sign him why not? They get something for nothing.

Also the ridiculous 'retaining' thing seemed like a joke. Much like 'launching Raymond into the Sun.'

I mean, I'd like to do it but the logistics are quite inconceivable.

OK I didn't know about the max 50% retained salary rule.

No, he's RFA with arbitration rights. He will be eligible for UFA a year from now.

Maybe. I understand he was drafted as a centre and has played mostly LW.

Yes. Yes, he does.

Right, they've got Dion now so they're sorted on that front.

So he's RFA this summer and UFA next (barring a bigger extension)? And he's had seemingly difficult negotiations in the past and will do so again? Seems like a decent target. He's never going to re-sign as a UFA after next season if they take him to the wall on this upcoming RFA deal.
