Panthers working on tying up future captain D Erik Gudbranson on multi year deal #Guddy #flapanthers
Huh, so I guess that multi year deal got canned then.

he only has two years of RFA left ... so it was either 1 year or a long-term deal. Makes sense to give him another short contract to let him earn the long-term deal. If they think they can sign him long-term next year, then why not?
EDIT: on the other hand, if they think of him as a future captain, as the tweet in JJ1532s post suggests, then yeah, seems a little weird.

Maybe its just so he's a free agent at the expansion draft so the panthers don't have to protect him and then he can sign long term after?

thats not how it works .. they would have to protect his RFA rights or he could be selected and the expansion team will have his rights.

A little surprised since Gudbranson really solidified himself as a top 4 defender. However, his job in the playoffs was to shadow Tavares, and he really wasn't able to shut him down very well (not all on him, but the fact remains).
Perhaps they want him to prove his value before locking him in long term. Worst thing you can do in a cap world is sign a mediocre player to a long-term deal, especially if there's a significant AAV attached.
I like Gudbranson a lot, but he has yet to realize his full potential in the NHL. He could be a Pronger without the offense if he chose to be.

He'll be an RFA next season, so he'll likely be in the expansion draft either way, but if there is an expansion announced, I bet we'll be seeing quite a few one-year deals signed this summer for this very reason.

Hearing Erik Gudbranson's one-year deal with #FlaPanthers worth $3.5 million; team plans on starting extension talks after Jan. 1.

The more I think about it, the more I think this has to do with the expansion draft coming up. It'll be a very interesting off-season for all free agents. I doubt you see many deals that are not of the 1 year variety.

How does the expansion draft affect this decision in any way? Florida will protect him regardless if he was on a one-year deal or a 6-year deal, would they not?

Because then the team that drafted him needs to sign him to a new contract, and I'm betting that a lot of players would rather not be stuck in an expansion franchise for a long time. If you do the work for them by signing Gudbranson to a team friendly long-term deal, then all they do is laugh and say "yes, I'll take that one please"
Panthers need to protect more than 3-dmen. Ekblad, Kulikov, Gudbranson, and Petrovic...possibly even Matheson depending on the draft rules, who looks to be a top pairing d-man when fully developed. That's a lot of guys to protect, and I don't think they automatically pick Gudbranson to be protected.
Until the rules are determined concretely, it's up to GMs to hedge their bets on what they think will happen. That's what I see Tallon doing here.
Or it could be what I said earlier: Tallon wants Gudbranson to take the next step in his development before signing long-term. This is all speculation anyways.

I just saw that too. Seems this is the way the league is moving now. Traditional analysis is going bye-bye.
Fair enough. There's an article that references the Bolland contract as a reason as to why Tallon is getting slowly moved out, but honestly, look at the Panthers cap situation and tell me that it isn't a thing of beauty at the moment:

Not sure what Tallon could have done better other than NOT sign the Bolland deal.

Its fine, but most of their best players are still on their entry level or bridge deals (or are 44 years old). Will be interesting to see what happens next year when a lot of these guys contracts come up. Will they be willing to spend up to the cap?
