Felt the price was the best available and waiting wouldn't have yielded more, best to move on the trade offer now in that case.
Re: Keeping Hudler?
Cap situation heading into next year, whether Jiri could fit going forward and who has raises coming up drove the decision to trade him.
Freeway: Picks vs prospects?
BT: We like picks, both for drafting and their value increase more and more as you approach the draft.
Timeline of the trade:
Talked to Dale Tallon for a while now. Stayed in touch after he expressed some interest.
Thinks its a tight market right now with the financial reality. Picks have a greater value as a result. Whether you're making the pick or trading it at the draft.
How do you project the next 2 days?
We're going to try and see if we can help ourselves. You've seen some teams be real aggressive. Think its going to be much more organized, less trying to connect WiFi's from planes. We'll see how much activity there will be involving Calgary.
Russell rumours
Don't believe all the reports about Russell, things can spread this time of year with false reports. Thinks the world of Kris Russell. Won't comment on interest levels, but he's smart and a good hockey player. Good hockey players always generate lots of interest. Cannot say enough good things about him though.
Difficult part of this time of the year, because there's a lot of activity, is talking about players as assets but can't forget these are people. Have to treat them in a dignified way.
Freeway: Anticipating any call-ups?
Yes, we're looking at that regardless of any other moves. I would anticipate someone is going to join us for the road trip.
What impact did Hudler have on the young players?
He's a skilled player, he helped drive the young players. He always talked to Johnny and Mono, and sometimes they even understood what he was saying! Real competitive player, wouldn't hesitate when he didn't think something wasn't good enough. Very skilled but able to keep things loose. After game 2 in Vancouver series, many had been talking about struggles Johnny and Mono had. Treliving went to go talk to the kids and Hudler stepped up and said "I got it."
How challenging has the last couple days been with Wideman hearing?
"Challenging is a word, I've got others". No date given when it will be announced. It is what it is at this point, we've dealt with it and we move on. Don't expect anything soon though.
What's the state of Derek Grant? Progressing. Broke his jaw in practice, had it wired shut but not in-depth surgery. Hopeful at the time it would be 6-8 week timeline but we'll see. First part of this week he'll get looked at. But he's a ways away.
Won't make predictions about what they may or may not do. But we'll try and help ourselves.

Treliving should STFU until all business is complete. What, are we the Edmonton Oilers and have to talk at length about the really mediocre results we just accomplished? Talk to us when the dust has settled. Until then you are looking for a pat on the back for mediocre results.

Yeah thats not how it works.
The media requests to talk to him so they can write stories about the trade.
It is almost useless for the media to publish quotes about a Hudler trade made on a saturday to show up in print on Monday.

Pretty typical to have a press conference if you trade one of your top two line forwards. He'd love more than anything not to have to talk to the media about it. It's an obligation to us the fans, through the media. I for one wanted to hear what he had to say. If you don't then don't listen, no need to be rude to Treliving about it.

How dare Treliving demand all the media come to him and force them to ask questions about a news item.
His ego has run amok!

Geez man, if you aren't careful, you are going to give Ricardo a run for the money in the crazy race.

From what I can gather from listening to that presser is that there's a few things on the stove outside of clearing out UFA's. At least that is how I perceive "we're going to try and help ourselves".

And how do you respond to a mod with a response like that without getting an infraction? Oh yeah, you don't
How about Treliving just address the media after the deadline when the dust settles? We don't need a play-by-play at this point. There is a helluva lot more work to be done at this point. We don't need a press conference to tell us a whole bunch of nothing.

Was there any discussion of Hiller, Jones, Jooris, Colborne?
He wouldn't speculate on anything to come.
Here's the things I took from it totally paraphrasing after the fact.
-Talked about of course you'd prefer prospects because they don't take as long as picks to come to fruition. In the end this was the best deal in terms of value.
-Talked about how the value of the 2nd rounder we just acquired goes up and up as we get closer to the draft and at the draft itself whether you choose to trade it or pick with it
-Talked about how great Russell is, how you win with him, how he's a good player. Talked about how good players go for good returns. Basically hinting we should get good value for him without really directly saying that.
I do think some fans underestimate how valuable 2nd rounders are. I think a 2nd rounder can get us a 2nd line winger in terms of trade value.

If they can package some cap (Staj/Engelland/Smid/Wideman/Raymond) with the Hudler pick(s) that would be awesome. Give us a chance to add a guy like Lucic/Okposo while still keeping our 2nd.

They do press conferences when the media asks for them. The media needs to cover this trade and need to hear from the GM on it.

Actually, they don't have to do a press conference because the media demands one. They can just say they have no comment at this time and they will address the media at a later time. Pretty standard stuff, especially at this time of year. The media doesn't run the Calgary Flames.

Sometimes it's just better to cut your losses and stop talking

You just don't really know what you're talking about in this case. He HAS to talk about this trade before Monday, no point putting off talking about it til tomorrow. It wouldn't be acceptable for him to not do it. Oligation to the fans through the media. This is a Canadian market. The GM and Coach are required to talk to the media about certain things. Big trades is one thing the GM HAS to talk about within a day of it happening in a Canadian market.
That's reality. Deal with it.
