Player's Tribune: How we Play Hockey in America
By Ryan....ugh....Kesler.
Quote:
You know what really got me into hockey? NHL ’94 on Sega Genesis. Some kids got inspired by watching Wayne Gretzky on Hockey Night in Canada. I got inspired by playing with 16-bit Steve Yzerman. Remember the wraparound trick? You could score eight goals a game with Yzerman. I’d have my brother going nuts.

That article is so unabashedly patriotic that I wouldn't have been surprised if it was written in red and blue text.

Only eight? with "the move"? with yzerman? you wrap around, goalie gets stuck on one post, and have empty net and he only scored 8? lame.

I think Kesler's lunge at Bollig the other night basically totally sums him up as a player, and likely a person. Two refs and a net in between them and he's trying to act like a tough guy.

For a super competitive guy, he sure loses a lot.

I can only imagine how many Ninja Turtles he was rewarded with for diving/embellishing to make that such a huge part of his game.

What a POS article. I guess it makes sense coming from the biggest POS in the league.
Lately the Player's Tribune seems to be lowering the quality, especially the hockey ones. This article and the Gaudreau one were terrible.

I think the only reason Flames fans thought the Gaudreau article was underwhelming is because we'd heard all of those stories before. To someone who hadn't heard them, it was probably a lot better.

The others in this series (hockey in Russia/Sweden) were really good at least. I'm guessing someone will write one from a Canadian perspective soon. Toews or Crosby is my guess.

Take off your blinders when you read this. I despise Kesler and can't wait for him to be gone from the league, but this article was pretty good. He laid it on thick about being blue collar and working hard to prove people wrong, but it's true.
Reading about how his dad praised him for his backchecking and never mentioned his goals has given me new ideas on how to help encourage my kid, who is the most talented player on his team but he doesn't work hard enough.

Clearly has no idea how anything works outside of his postcode.
I wonder if his Dad gives him a hard time for diving and being a ######?

Yeah those were good. I find they are getting really hoke though. Now every player is lining up to write them and they just don't have a genuine feel to me anymore.

Hate Kesler as a player. Not gonna read the article out of principle.

The title should be "How Kesler played hockey in America". Mostly just personal stories about himself growing up -- I only found a few paragraphs that were actually about hockey in America generally. Maybe it's because Sweden and Russia are more detached from Canada/North America but I found those articles much more enlightening.
+1 on the Jock Jams reference though.

Wasn't going to read it because I hate him, and I didn't want to read an article that would make me hate him less.
Yep, hate him just the same, perhaps even a bit more.
