Yes, that is important. Not only does the name have to sound good with the last name, there also needs to be the appropriate number of syllables to be menacing enough when given the dreaded 'triple-named yell' by yourself and your spouse. These are issues that need to be addressed.

the best first names i've heard appear in the battletech novels, the names of the clan warriors in robert thurstons' and michael stackpoles' books.
names like severan, aidan, vladimir, mostly european names i guess, but it sure made the characters sophisticated!

Owen works since it's one you can't really change into some sort of cutsie/stupid nickname ie: Doug to Dougie or something, y'know?

Pedro is always a good one. Just don't name him Cato, than you're asking for trouble.

What Anthony and Firefly were talking about, they aren't wrong. It should have a nice ring to it. One thing I remember reading a while back was that the key to a name that sounds good is if you have a long last name, the first name should be shorter and vice versa.
One thing I've noticed a trend of lately, and you can even take your own stab at it, is taking a name and making a small change or combining two names. Find a name you like, that might be common and start thinking of what rhymes with it. You might be surprised what you come up with. If all else fails, Eddie=WIN!

I've always been partial to Argyl or something really original like Mike/Richard (so when he's a Dick it's okay to say it)! Berlin is a good one. Female way is Berlynn.

I've always liked names that are normally short something else, but not for your kid.
i.e. my first son's name will be Dave (NOT David), or Andy (NOT Andrew)

Hank or Floyd.
These are both names that my wife vetoed when I suggested them for our child, though I can't figure out why...
