I think Treliving might be holding out for something a little more immediate than draft picks 2 or 3 drafts away.

Torres is staying with the San Jose farm team, so he was basically included as a contract/salary dump.

Russell >> Polak.
That'd a great return for him. Spaling is worth probably a 3rd, so a 2nd + 3rd roughly for Polak.

Watching the Leafs for the rest of the season is going to be hilarious. Last game I watched I already didn't know half of the players. At this rate 75% of the team is going to be call-ups.

Probably wise to take picks down the road. I think Toronto has something like a dozen picks already for this years' draft.

I didn't think Spaling was really worth anything so this is a great trade IMO.
Polak really grew on me this year though, and I think San Jose will be happy with him. He was pretty solid on the backend for the Leafs all season.

14 i think... I could see them packaging a bunch of picks to get two cracks in the top 10 and using one of them on Nylander... TML are finally making proper decisions..

Great deal for the leafs. Realize those 2nds are a year plus down the road but that may be even better as sharks will slide a bit as their best players age further.
Also, the market price for Russell may be getting clearer.

Great trade for Toronto. Looks like the market for rentals is being set by the Leafs.

Two second rounders for two crappy players and to get rid of the last two months of Torres' contract.
Always nice to see a division rival sabotage itself.

They have a max of 12 but could be 10 depending on how the Penguins do and when they give up comp picks for Babcock/Lamarillio.

And they're now in a position to set an all time record for most picks in a 7 round draft.
EDIT: Whoops, I'm wrong, neither of those picks are this year. They already traded this year's, didn't they?

I'm pretty sure with the Pens the deal is if the Pens make the playoffs the Leafs get their 1st rounder. If they don't make it they get their 2nd rounder.

Sharks traded their 1st for Martin Jones. So they probably wanted to keep 2016. I'd guess if it was the 2016 pick, they'd have gotten a 2017 3rd instead of a second 2nd round pick.

Whereas I agree this is a great trade for the Leafs, I also feel Polak is a solid playoff pickup for the Sharks. He matches up well against the big Ducks team, which they play in the first round...surely they'll be gearing up with that specific series in mind.
