I remember a while back (on the old forum?), somebody commented on the best way to convert one's CD's into MP3s so that they could be used on Ipods etc.

Does anyone remember what the best program is?

go too download.com, type in MP3 Ripper and the one on the top will be the best and newest one until a newer one comes out.

I use itunes, and can't really think of anything it could do better. Although, I wouldn't mind a machine where I could just dump all my cds into, and they'd magically write them to mp3s. Kind of like those change machines! Seriously, it is so labour intensive to try to convert your whole library. I actually downloaded a lot of pirated versions of cds I already owned, just because it was faster and easier.

The best way if you're an anal retentive audiophile is to use Exact Audio Copy for ripping and LAME for encoding. Configuring these properly can take some patience and a degree of technical expertise not possessed by the average computer user, though.

Personally, I just use iTunes. I think I've set it to encode at Variable Bit Rate targetted for 192 kbps, highest quality, and regular stereo (not joint stereo). Also be sure to check the error correction box; ripping will take slightly longer, but it will help to make sure you get fewer pops, hisses, or other ripping errors. I've got a set of fairly high-end headphones, and when I use those options for ripping my iPod sounds great.

iTunes does everything for you if you have an iPod. When you put in a disc you just import to iTunes into AAC or MP3 and it will add the songs to your iPod when you sync. When you put in a CD top right button changes to an import button and it will find the track names, album name and cover art for you. Make sure you check the prefs, properties on PC?, that the import settings are right ie mp3 @ 256. AAC is a better format then MP3 but MP3s are more versitile.

Even if you don't have an iPod, iTunes is free and a great way to organize your music, burn, rip, mix.

Apple claims that using AAC files rather than MP3 uses less power, and thus increases the iPod battery life between recharges.

But as Barnes says, MP3s are more versitile. Not everyone can read AACs (Advanced Audio Coding, or Agility Association of Canada).
