The Flames' Goaltending Situation for the Rest of 2015-16
What do the Flames do now?
Ramo is out for the year with a Torn ACL, and has likely played his last game as a Flame.
Hiller is awful, but Hartley wants to ride him.
Ortio is, well, we really don't know.
For what it's worth, I wrote an article on this today, but I'm curious to know how you think the rest of the season will play out.
What should happen?
What will?

Just keep who they have now, unless a good deal falls into their laps for a future starter.

Hope Hiller can get some value. Trade him, ride Ortio out for rest of the season.

I can see them making a move at the deadline to add a goalie. One thing I would really like would be adding a minor leaguer, somehow trading Hiller and giving Poulin/Ortio the ball for the last 20 or so games. See what we have in these guys and maybe improve our draft situation

Hiller's worth what, about a 5th-6th at this point? Maybe a 4th? A Boston 3rd?

I still hope that pipe dream of Hiller to SJ comes true, and then the Flames roll with Ortio/Poulin/Stalock for the remainder of the season.

Give Ortio the reigns. Hiller is just letting in too many weak goals of late.

I'd hope so, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

To me based on where the season is going you might as well ride Ortio till the end of the year to see what he's all about. Next year is a very interesting year for the flames in terms on goaltending as they have no one locked up. If Ortio is going to be that guy then why not see if he can carry the load.

Brought this up in the other thread but it got buried, What if Ortio strings together a few bad reliefs/starts. Do you send him down and recall Poulin?
That would probably end the relationship between Joni and Calgary?

It certainly would from Joni's vantage point. What incentive would he have to play here?

I'll tell you what they shouldn't do. Trade with the Leafs or sign their castoffs.

Do everything you can to trade HIller at this point before he gets injured. Run with an Ortio & Poulin duo and see how good they are. If either of them are worth it, we keep that one as the backup this year and try to sign a decent goalie in the summer. If they lose every game...it really isn't that big of a deal.

Though this is the worst injury, Ramo does seem to get hurt 1-2 times a year each year he's been here. I have to think that will factor into whether he's brought back or not. I can't see him being back unless he's the clear #2 behind a quality starter.

Sit Hiller, his trade value drops with every SOG. Ride Ortio and see what happens. I think goalies take awhile to develop, so now is the time to see if that's what happens with Ortio. I could've sworn I seen him play well before.

Ortio is sure reminding me of McBackup during his time here... Same kind of body language. Goes down early in the butterfly and looks lost and frozen when the puck goes in past him.
If he can get some confidence in his game then we can get a true reading of where Joni is at from a development standpoint. If not, I won't be surprised to see them give up on him after going out on a limb and giving him a 1-way contract this year.

If Hartley is still hell-bent on gunning for the playoffs then he'll ride Hiller.
Once that dream is well and truly dead then I'd hope he plays Ortio as much as possible.

Trading Hiller (I don't believe he has any value whatsoever) and riding Ortio/Poulin for the rest of the year is basically tanking isn't it? I don't subscribe to the theory that we need to see what these guys have. Thus far, the facts show they are AHLers.

IMO the Flames should give the bulk of the starts to Ortio. The team wasn't making the playoffs with Ramo starting, and they aren't going to make the playoffs with Hiller either. Time to see what Ortio has as a non-emergency keeper.
