Default Off Air Comments Caught On Air - HNIC 02.13.16 (Van vs Tor)

All credit goes to reddit user PhenomenonYT

Jim Hughson (play by play), Craig Simpson (colour commentary), Glenn Healy (between benches), and Scott Oake (rink side reporter) "off air comments" make it onto the air.

The homerism is strong.

I have seen this as well. I was watching the Flames, Leafs games last week on an online feed, and when it goes to a TV timeout I don't get the ads just a live feed of the rink, they also made some comments about it being a crappy game. Something that everyone was thinking. No big deal to me, but I would not want to say it on the air.

I don't see any homerism or anything that's not true. Broadcasters are allowed to have opinions like the rest of us. It's not their fault that the technical guys left their mics on when they weren't supposed to be.

Kinda kills the idea HNIC is pro-Leafs.
Healy called "Legends Row" "Losers Row" which is just stupid.

Is it just me or is that really nothing to be riled up about? Everything they said made sense.

It's hilarious that these guys aren't taking the streaming feed into consideration.

One of my best friends does play by play in the QMJHL, and during commercial breaks is when he'll give specific information and shout-outs to people who he knows is listening to the online Telus stream. (ie: fans of teams who are listening to follow prospects, players' family, etc).

The fact that at the junior level these guys are smart enough to know they're still on even if the main broadcaster is off, yet the main Hockey Night in Canada crew doesn't is kind of shocking really.

I find that stuff rather refreshing to hear actually.

It is nice to hear NHL personalities, whether it's the players/coaches/media, give an actual opinion.

Reminds me a little of when Ray Ferraro made fun of Phaneuf on TSN that went over the air. He had to apologize. I doubt anyone has to here. Rogers might issue a statement though.

Yes, this one example, this exception, surely does that.

The "Losers Row" statement from a loudmouth career backup should be career ending.

Yeah, it would be a lot more interesting for sure. I would love a more unfiltered commentary on games and players.

We are talking about two teams that in reality are steaming piles of poop and I actually give all three credit for remaining very professional with the microphones supposedly off. A little joking and some opinions of what was transpiring on the ice is all that I see here and nothing controversial or offensive to anyone. That said it has to be an embarrassment for the Canucks GM and head coach but when you stink like the Canucks the people running the team deserve criticism.

Irony is a Leafs troll with a victim complex.

And it is well known that Hughson is a major Vancouver homer, so you're not exactly offering any breaking news here, sparky.

The mics are always on, it's how they talk to the director/producer etc between takes, it is up to the audio op to kill the feed going out of the building. We use to get a clean feed of video and audio from the trucks but they killed that last year with Rogers taking over the streaming. Now they try and lock down where that feed goes so more than likely someone on the truck got crap for this. Although the way GM place handles signals is brutal and convoluted and it would be very easy for someone to make a mistake in the patching or routing.

Waaaaay back in the 80s when I was a kid, we had an 'illegal' satellite dish and we watched all sorts of out of market games back then. If you knew which satellite to tune into (a lot of trial and error to find these) you could get the 'raw' feeds that had no commercials. On many of these you could hear the announcers talking the whole time when it went to commercial. It's been too many years for me to remember the names any more, but I remember there were a couple guys in the booth who just hated each other. They would spend the whole commercial break ripping into each other for mistakes they made or whatever. Then it would come back from break and you would think they were best friends!

I remember another broadcast where the cameraman would spend the commercial breaks scanning the crowd for hot women and the guys would 'rate' them and commend or show their disdain for the cameraman's choices. The things they said would definitely get them fired these days.

Most of the time is was just boring technical stuff between the broadcasters and the tech guys. One guy did a series of vocal exercises quite often. Occasionally they would talk about the game, but I remember thinking at the time that it didn't even seem like they cared about what was going on most of the time.
