Default Danier Leather begins insolvency process

Its not clear where this is going to wind up, and they could still be sold, but it looks like the death of another Canadian retailer. The shares are down about 89% over the past few years, and basically they're just way over-leveraged. I thought that I would post this for a few reasons:

1) Need a new leather jacket? Probably some deals to be had there!
2) There have been a number of Canadian retailers who are now gone over the past few years. Target, Blacks, Smart Set and I know there are others that I just can't think of off the top of my head. Interesting times for retailers here; is it increased competition in general or the rise of online shopping?

Do more people think it is immoral to wear leather, than 10-20 years ago?

I just think leather jackets are out of style. Technical fabrics seem to be way more "in", though I'm hardly one to judge that.

Seems like with the surge of social media more people are becoming vegans these days.

Leather jackets are like 20-30 years out of date. They haven't been fashionable except for a period in the mid 70s and in the late 80s/early 90s.

Danier Leather just reeks of 1991 when I think about it.

True. I can't see the Friendly Neighbourhood Dominatrix switching to wool anytime soon.

This is the perfect opportunity to compile a gimp suit.

I mean...if one were inclined to do so.

Danier's problems can be traced back to offshoring of their production. The quality just went way down.

Basically they were selling cheap material with poor workmanship. I have stuff from them that is 15-20 years old that is in good shape. On the other hand stuff from 5 years ago fell apart.

It feels as if a leather jacket from Danier is about 20 years out of style. Leather lady pants from Aritzia or leather lady jackets from Holt Renfrew on the other hand...

So ya, male leather jackets seem way out of style.

I agree that Danier product isn't very stylish and also the quality issue someone mentioned above - their leather just wasn't that "nice" last time I went there (which was probably 5+ years ago).

But leather for men and women (imo) is not out of style. Although I will concede leather pants for men could be difficult to wear stylishly without looking like a biker. Or a Village People impersonator. Or both.

More the reason to wear them then. Social media is full of people waiting to be outraged about something.

I guess it depends on the situation, but I think a leather jacket can still be good. I mean obviously the 8 ball jacket isn't what I mean, but a nice leather jacket with a pair of jeans in some situations is fine. Its just not everyday kind of wear I guess.

Danier was always one of those retailers with deep discounts on boxing day. They had security controlling the lines, ads in the newspapers, the brown paper packaging stuff covering their store front windows, etc.

I bought one jacket from them about 15 years ago. I think I wore it 2 times.

Have you seen the Fonze without a leather jacket?

He looks lame, and so is the thought that leather jackets will ever be out of style.

Except in the minds of nerds, letterman athletes at bad colleges and members of the glee club.

With so many cars coming with leather seats, I would say no. It's more a fashion/style thing than anything to do with morals IMO.

Hmm... might be time to see if they have any suede leather jackets that may function well as a casual autumn/spring jacket. Not a huge fan of shiny leather.
