Default Haitian born status Indian denied access to first nations basketball

Racism and hypocrisy abound.

Quote:
Organizers of an all First Nations sports event in B.C. are being accused of racism and discrimination for benching a status Indian player who is black.

Organizers of the All Native Basketball Tournament say Josiah Wilson can't compete because he doesn't have First Nations ancestry or "bloodlines."
Quote:
Wilson, a point guard with the Heiltsuk Wolf Pack team, is of Haitian descent. He was adopted as an infant in Haiti and raised by a Heiltsuk First Nation family in Canada.

It's funny, because I know people who are white and have nothing to do with indigenous culture, but because they have a tiny bit of native blood, they claim that ancestry and the benefits that come with it (while not enduring the hardships). Then this guy who was raised in the indigenous culture and identifies with it is discriminated against based on blood.... it makes no sense to me.

In my experience, Native communities are among the most racist in Canada.

I have enough native blood to claim some benefits as a Metis. But I don't.

And that is just it. I've seen people I grew up with who not once talked about being native or their heritage or anything, find 1/16th or whatever they needed to claim some form of status to get into Education or Fire Fighting school. Then they never talk about it again. Makes me sick to see the rights and privileges that these people fought for being abused. Then you get a person who openly identifies with the group and is associated with the community and he is told no because he lacks that official blood line. Just sad really, it should be the other way around. Tell these people that want to claim the status they need to get involved with the community and remain involved on at least SOME level first. Don't punish those who support your views and beliefs.
